Giles would be perfect in front of Lee and Ramirez.

I'd take Lofton for a 1 year stop gap in cf. Hopefully, they'd bring back Hairston tho for insurance. Trade Wood & Patterson for Manny. Get Manny & Giles, and they can just bring back Neifi @ ss or play Cedeno @ ss. If Neifi's @ ss, at least they'd have a solid glove on the left side of the infield.

1) You think you can get Manny Ramirez for that package? (if that is the Manny that you are talking about)

2) No Neifi plz.

Lugo is an intriguing option if the Rays were willing to part with him. Maybe we could create a larger deal and pry away Huff as well. Placing Huff in LF and having Lugo for SS would fill two needs.

I was thinking the same thing, but I would rather have Giles than Huff. I know Huff is younger, but Giles OBP is hard to pass up. Now if we can go a few million over $100...

Ignore Zito, bring in Huff. Starting OF at Huff, Murton, Giles. I say this every time I talk about Huff, but he is on the verge on exploding and getting out of Tampa to Chicago will do the trick. This saves 2.5 million.

This part is a stretch. Convince Nomar to make the switch to 2nd base, pick up Walker's contract and trade him or just let him walk. I really believe he is going to consider a position change this offseason, and I do believe he wants to stay a Cub. He opened up to taking over 3rd base pretty fast. The 2.5 million saved in not taking Zito goes to Nomar with $5 million + incentives. Walker makes 2.5 million so this balances out.

Scary good Lineup:

Furcal

Nomar

Lee

Aram

Giles

Huff

Barrett

Murton

Hill, Pinto, and even Guzman battle out for the #5 spot. One of these will probably be gone for Huff.

Now who plays CF in that outfield?

Giles has played quite a bit of CF in his career. I wouldn't put him there as my first choice, but you don't have to be a world class sprinter to be an effective CF (Jim Edmonds, cough cough).

To the original poster, I think I'd almost rather have Jonny Gomes were I to get a Tampa outfielder than I would Huff.

Giles isn't a spring chicken anymore. Putting him in cf is a good way to get him hurt.

Furthermore, if our OF is Murton, Giles, Huff from L to R, we'll easily have the worst OF defense in the majors.

I still say instead of Zito, Burnett, or Santana....the Cubs should go after Matt Morris. It's a case of addition plus subtraction for the Cards. He'd still be in the NL Central so he knows the teams, no adjustment time.

You'd have:

Prior

Wood

Z

Morris

Maddux

It would also allow you to trade Williams, Hill, and/or Rusch to help fill LF/RF.

the main problem i see is that in this lean year the few valuable free agents may have a higher than normal price tag. zito might be areach simply because the other side has to trade him. burnett might be a better possibilty(not a better pitcher or fit) i might stick with dempster as a less expensive option and look for more starting pitching knowing that wood could be back in the bullpen if he falters again.

i would really try to get someone interested in wood. if i could get a rookie ball prospect and not pay anything i would jump. then try to sign burnett. 12 mil hung up in a huge ? is probably the make or break point of next season. i do not see the cubs spending enough money to cover that potential hole.

The only problem I have with getting rid of Wood, is the nature of his "injury" this year. He's said over and over that it's not painful............more of an irritation, or discomfort. Which to me indicates that he there's floating depree from the surgery and he needs it cleaned out. Matt Morris had a similar situation with his arm after TJS.

I think we should have someone ready to cover him if he struggles next year, but I think there's a very good chance that he'll actually progress next year since he's having his surgery this week. He'll have plenty of time to rehab and will be ready first thing next year.

I don't think anyone will argue that he's not a great pitcher when healthy.

Get either Weaver or Millwood. Better start preparing for the end of the Wood era.

Weaver? Why?

Throw out his one bad year in NY, and he's been solid since 2000, and he's only 29.

It's also worth pointing out that those seasons were spent in the old Comerica(before they moved in the fences) and Dodger stadium. On the road Weaver gives up a .275 BAA, he probably would do worse than his numbers were he to sign with us.

Millwood? Why? :D

But Milwood is just Wood with Mil at the front.

And like Kerry, he gets no run-support.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't wait to hear the diagnosis after his surgery. I suspect it's nothing structural (meaning no tears) and that he just needed it cleaned out.

Good Luck tomorrow, Woody!

I still think you give Wood another chance. Perhaps a new pitching coach would help as well.

Give him another shot next year, but how much you want to resign him for?? If the Yankees offer him 3 and 30, you want to match??
