Playing the Devil's Advocate

I did a quick little study on Dusty's reputation as a player's manager.

Some slightly surprising results, I'd say. It doesn't surprise me that players actually play better under Dusty, but the degree of the difference sure does. Still, a lot of it is probably explained by the fact that Baker tends to get/play players in their prime as opposed to those still developing.

BK, you're aware that BP did a study in their '03 Handbook? While less extensive, it was under the same premise of how players for some reason have played better under Baker.

No I wasn't, actually. If I was I probably wouldn't have bothered. I am still interested in looking at this issue an a bit greater detail, however. In particular, I'm wodering how the distribution of "talent" in this area works out.

I've been fascinated by the success of Braves youngsters, so I started to work on a Braves/Cox excel sheet about a month ago. This was also motivated by the BP peice from the 2003 that that UK mentions. I am getting close to finishing with the data. Maybe we can put them side-by-side in the coming days ?

Interesting article BK.

Looking at Baker's players stats I can see that veterans play better for him which is what I've always thought would happen. But, do these stats say anything about player fundamentals and being a poor strategist? This article doesn't change what I thought of Baker as he has his strengths and weaknesses like any manager. I think it's a mistake to think he was a complete baffone and I blame Hendry for making the wrong hire in the first place.
