...lose the next two we might as well shut down Wood and start playing the young guys. 9 1/2 games out with 6 teams ahead of us would be too hard of a climb.

Tonight and tomorrow are MUST win games.

Its a very tough road to hoe even if the Cubs win the next two, but two straight series victories over the Cards and Stros in a week certainly provides a high level of hope that something special might be in store.

Maybe I spend too much time watching these guys, but I just can't believe a team with this many problems is a contender, even when they go on a hot streak...bad defense up the middle, no speed on the basepaths, too many streaky hitters...we'll see though.

hate to break it to you, but 7.5 games out with 6 teams in front is pretty much done.

True, except we play the stros 9 more times.

IF we win the next two (against Petitte and Oswalt - slim chance)

we'll be 5 and half out. If we can get to 4 games out by september we have a shot.

If we lose this series we are done.

We could still be 6.5 out if Washington wins twice. Or, we could be 6 out if Philly wins twice.

If you only look at the Astros, yes, we still have a shot. The problem is the other 5 teams. It's hard enough to pass one team, let alone 2. 5 is stretching the realm of possability...

If we were playihng good baseball, I'm right there with you. But we're not, and we pretty much have a forfeit lineup out there every 3 or 4 games...

Lose the next two and start playing for the future

Trade Maddux, Garciaparra, Lawton, Perez, Burnitz and Hollandsworth

all would probably clear waivers and start looking at some kids.

Win the next two and I have to watch this bunch of has beens struggle to stay around 500 for the rest of the year. I wish we could get more As games.

Well, we're halfway there with tonight's win.

Cubs' season once again "hanging by a thread". Lose tomorrow night though - especially if lose big - and I think it'll officially be "stick a fork in 'em" time.

Who's the 6th team ahead of us?? We're tied w/ Milwaukee and they're nothing to worry about. New York doesn't have the personnel either, and Florida may be too banged up. The teams the Cubs need to catch are Washington, PHilly and HOuston. Like other's have pointed out, there's still 8 games against Houston. As for Washington and Philly, there's nothing special about either team.

Plus they are playing each other presently. We win, we are gaining on 1 or the other.

I'm as pessimistic as anyone, but what's the harm in dreaming? The season will TRULY be over soon enough ... I'm holding on to the threads of contention until the math says I can't.

Wash. and Philly are playing each other that is.

I'm holding out hope cause, Houston, Florida, Washington & Philly don't look too hot. Houston could really use Kent, Beltran and Bagwell.

And, you're a Cubs fan. Its only natural to be that way. :P

Just be blunt: Houston's lineup sucks. I'm ashamed - as a fan - that the Cubs got trounced 12-4 last night. Pathetic, when every game counts when playing the WC leader, and a divsional rival.

Ensberg IS Houston's offense recently and their whole lineup tee'd off on Rusch and Wellemeyer last night.

Well, their lineup is comparable to the Macias/Perez/Hollandsworth debacles the Cubs ran out there. Biggio, Ensberg and Berkman are that whole team.

Yeah that lineup isn't very, but almost any teams can get 12 @ Minute Maid. It's nice to see some off days coming up. Dusty can skip Williams or Rusch.

It was announced tonight during the game taht he will be skipping Williams.

Heard that. Will they bring back Williams on Saturday?? I'd rather pitch him in the Atlanta series. Let Rusch pitch against Colorado, and hope the Cubs can win 20-19. :o Looks like Prior vs. Kim on Friday. Hopefully that's a slam dunk.

I know you qualified your statement by saying "hopefully", but that 8-game losing streak came at the hands of "slam dunk" wins for the Cubs.

If these guys choke in the Colorado series, I hope Woody takes the bat to some players' lockers this time. The club can't afford the luxury, IMO, of dropping even one game in that series, with Atlanta and Florida coming up.

With Prior going on Friday and Maddux on Sunday, anything less than 2 out of 3 would be a huge disappointment.

I think we will win tomorrow. I was worried about tonight but Maddux really looked good. I expect Carlos to dominate tomorrow and they'll get three or four runs off Roy. Ryan in the 9th still scares the hell out of me even though the save record is good.

I'll also pull for Philadelphia to take 2 of the next 3.

I'm rooting for Washington to sweep. Philly scares me more than Washington. Washington hasn't been good since the All Star break. They played way over their heads early in the year. Hopefully, they play over their head's tomorrow and sweep the doubleheader.
