Perhaps this was discussed earlier, but I read on another Cubs forum that Brownlie made his first start in a while on Tuesday. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5 IP, and was throwing in the mid-90s for most of the 5 innings. Can anyone confirm this?

If that is the case, that would be outstanding news. With Brownlie's knowledge of pitching, if his velocity comes back, he could be a top of the rotation starter. That's a huge IF though. Where did your report come from?

i cant believe that we wouldnt have heard about this. it'd be darn close to the biggest news of the year in the cubs minor league system.

Brownlie did start on Tuesday (you can check the 8-2 Minor League game threads for the numbers), but there weren't any reports about a return in velocity.

His fastball was mid 90's or his outlaw curve? He has a ways to go before the outlaw curve is hitting 97 again. :D

Not long ago it was reported that his velocity was returning in the bullpen. His numbers seem to have gotten a little better, but mid-90's would be excellent news.

Does anyone know for sure if he will get another start? I would be happy to go to the game and see what the radar gun says. With high school football ready to start (coaching not playing) I haven't been down to a game lately. Add the fact that they have been away for the last 2 weeks.

If he started on the 2nd, he would be scheduled to start again on the 7th (not counting off days and other things like that).

Well, you're in luck. The website stopped putting up the pitching matchups, but apparently they put them back up sometime this afternoon. Brownlie is scheduled to start Sunday, August 7th. They have been wrong before, though.

The starter for the 8th isn't listed, but Valdes' time in the rotation may be over.

Yeah, I just saw that as well. I guess, if I must, take one for the team and have to go to the game on Sunday. I have a football camp at 3, but the game is at 1, so I should be able to go. If I do, I will be happy to give everyone a report.

Let's hope the rumor is true and he is hitting the mid 90's.

i may be able to go to the sunday game as well. everybody send me a couple bucks, or i'm going to go and not tell anybody how he looked.

Maybe we'll all just send DesMoinesCub $1 instead. 8)

I hope it's true -- would be great to hear from someone firsthand (or secondhand, I guess).

If everyone would send me a $1, I might even get to sit in the expensive seats!!! And if everyone sends me $1, I could drink for free for a long, long time. I might even have to buy ABuck a beer.

However, that could make for a rough football camp with the elementary kids. :?

I was at the game. Brownlie looked pretty good and was making guys miss and hitting his spots. He settled down after a few hits in the 1st. As to the title of the thread - there was no posted radar gun at the game (though it looked like there was one behind the plate...).

I hate every single one of you. Stop giving me hope.

lol..i was wondering when JC would make an appearance in this thread....I'll wait until I know for certain how hard he's throwing before making an opinion on all of this.

Keep in mind that the source for this rumor is a message board and that the likelihood of any player magically regaining 5-6 mph on a fastball is very low.

Just tryin' to help, JC...

Did anyone try to email Deene Ehlis to ask him about Brownlie's velocity/move back to the rotation?

I had something come up today, and won't be making the game. I will try to e-mail Ellis and see what I get for a response.

Sorry!

PS- I am not returning any of the money you sent either :D

Between Valdez' struggles at AAA, the Cubs thinking that he'd help more out of the pen and Brownlie's recent pen success, I'm not shocked the two were swapped.

That'd be nice if Brownlie's velocity was back up. You guys might want to check out today's radio broadcast (which starts in about an hour) - they'd definitely be talking about Bobby's velocity if it's up.

I was able to listen to the first inning of the I-Cubs game today, and in the first inning, the only fastball that Ehlis announced was at 87. He also struck a guy out without throwing a fastball. I have e-mailed Ehlis to find out more, but haven't heard back yet. If anyone can tell me more, that would be great.

87, hunh. As I suspected, just another message board rumor...

I still haven't heard back from Mr. Ehlis. At this point I don't think I will. Anyway, the fastball I am referring to was the first pitch of the game. Take it for what it is worth.

I've gotten a reply from him. It may have taken a day or two. But he's not in the booth tonight, so he might not have even checked his email.

There's a Q & A over at ITI (Insider only) with Brownlie. ITI is doing a free preview, so it's available to anyone to read.

Here's the link:

http://cubs.scout.com/2/426225.html

It talks about his loss in velocity, and he says his velocity is starting to come back some what. He said his fastball is hitting 92. Not where he was when he started, but it's better than last year.
