There's a Q & A over at ITI (Insider only) with Brownlie. ITI is doing a free preview, so it's available to anyone to read.

Here's the link:

It talks about his loss in velocity, and he says his velocity is starting to come back some what. He said his fastball is hitting 92. Not where he was when he started, but it's better than last year.

That's a great interview, thanks for posting the link. Brownlie sounds intelligent. It also sounds to me as if he has a very good idea about what he wants to do when he's on the mound. I like the talk about pounding the strikezone and trusting his stuff.

Good news! Even if the velocity isn't back to where it was, it's definitely an improvement. I liked what he had to say about moving to the bullpen, then back into the rotation.

Wow, maybe it wasn't just a rumor after all.

Still, there is a big difference between hitting 92 and consistently living there with your fastball.

As a starter, yeah. But he said he had it up at 92 for a few innings. Who knows where his future is, but if it's in the bullpen, he could conceivably even throw a tad harder.

It also sounded as if his velocity was coming back as a result of him not muscling up and trying to throw "hard" and just letting his natural ability take over. If he can continue to "trust" his arm, his velocity may continue to build over time even as a starter.

Bottom line, its still wait and see with Brownlie.

I remember when he was drafted the only thing that came to my mind was that we had Prior and a guy who was alot like Ben Sheets (who up to that point had not REALLY impressed beyond his raw stuff). That would have been a great 1-2.

That is a pretty messed up tease if it isn't true. If he got back mid 90's velocity I think that along with Pie's year would make this annoyingly annoying Cubs season somewhat of a success to me.
