I've always been a big Hawkins fan, and I understand he tanked for us. I was very disappointed with him as much as anyone. But this boo-ing, (whether or not he brought it on) is class-less. let the man move on with his life. Besides, its not as if LaTroy did NOTHING for the cubs, he was a solid if not premier set-up guy who got thrown into a bad mix. Let it go you bums (those who boo)

Also from that article:

"He puts the ball in play," Baker said of the red-head. "It's like with [Jason] Dubois when he was doing pretty good. I try to match [Murton] up early in his career against guys who I think he has a chance of hitting. You take baby steps at first and then there comes a time when he's ready to play against everybody."

When exactly is that time? :?

When the Cubs have a new manager.

Ditto. Murton is seeing the ball very well right now and Baker just seems to have no clue. If Baker put Dubois in there more when he was hot the Cubs may have won another game or two....God forbid a young guy ever just get thrown in there from the start.

No one should be surprised that the players were disappointed in the Cub fans reactions to Hawkins. After all, Hawkins was a well liked guy in the clubhouse. Everybody needs to remember the chant really started after midnight after many, many people had lots of beers by the seventh inning, or 5-6 hours of being there. The "Haw - kins" Haw-kins" chant probably wouldn't have disappointed the Cub players, but when you chant "Hawkins sucks" that to them goes over the line. And as hard as it is to admit, Dempster was probably right. Most of those chanting were probably cheering more for him to stink it up, than for the Cubs to rally.

If the fans are going to boo Hawkins at least be more creative than saying Hawkins sucks. The fans do have the right to say or do what they want because they paid to get in. I went to the Zoo the other day and screamed at the Lions because they didn't come out and fight in front of my kids. I paid good money to see them and my money goes to their food so I want a good show. So, I'm screaming "Lions suck!" as loud as I can and then some stupid White Sox fan jumps the fence and starts a fight with one of the Lions. I didn't know tatoo's could come off like that.

LOL next time at a Cubs/Giants game I'll be the one trying to get a "Hawkins was routinely ineffective in his miscast role!" chant going.

I don't condone the "Hawkins Sucks" chant at all. But, if the Cubs were so displeased and insulted by it, the could have made a request to have an announcement made. Or, a microphone could have been brought to the dugout for Dusty to make a PA announcement that things like that don't go on in Wrigley. Its been done by coaches/managers before during professional games. Heck, they had three freaking nights to come up with the idea. Crying and moaning in the paper after the fact just draws further attention to it.

Personally I don't want my kids around when fans are yelling "Sucks". I've always considered it different than stinks and the meaning is vulgar IMO.

Really? You think they'd do that and that it would work? Wouldn't all of that just contribute to drawing attention to it, like in your last sentance?

This is one of those things that is just unfortunate. I doubt there's really anything that can fix it.

I would be all over that chant. Very Conan-esque.

Neither do I. Thus, had the Cubs addressed the situation publicly at the time instead of allowing it to linger for three days, perhaps the serenade would have stopped sooner. Instead, crying about it in the paper doesn't solve the problem or address the 38,000 morons at the game who were being insulting.

Agreed. Also, many of the chants that you don't hear on TV (i.e. just one or two guys are doing it) are worse.

At a Cardinals/Cubs game in Busch, some Cubs fans were quite vulgar and drunk. Some of their shouts were very obsenely directed at the players, while some just made no sense ("Hey Jeff Suppan, you can't even put soup in a pan!"). As long as drunk idiots attend baseball games, this will continue.

Man if "Sucks" is now considered Vulgar and wrong, the Christian Extremist Right really is having a profound effect on this country.

This is BASEBALL, not Seniors Bingo. Booing, Heckling, Chanting the opposing players names, are ALL acceptable. There is a line, but using the word "Sucks" is not it.

I'm just saying if Dusty was that insulted by it, if he truly feels that it detrimentally affects his ability to bring players to Chicago, then he could have had an announcement made at the game to address those who actually were being insulting. Laying down a quote in the paper doesn't ensure that those same people will get the message.

I for one would laugh at that announcement until there were tears in my eyes. Could you imagine, the Yankees making an announcement to not mock Pedro, or the Red Sox making an announcement to not heckle Yankees players?

So you're saying that seniors are offended by vulgar language, and therefore have less of a right to enjoy themselves at a game? Maybe the word "sucks" is pretty low on the offensive scale, but I really disagree with the rest of your post.

Why is it that you single Dusty out when he didn't say anything nearly as negative as Lee and Dempster, who seemed a lot more insulted?

I wonder if you'll have that same opinion if you're watching your son/daughter play and overhear parents saying they suck.

Go ahead and laugh. Your admission to the stadium is based on abiding by the terms set forth by the team. If you want to openly abrogate a rather simple, civil request from your host, that is an issue for you to deal with.

And, this isn't the east coast. I doubt many would disagree that a different attitude exists on the east coast than in Chicago. Just as a different attitude exists in the midwest than on the west coast. Not better, just different. Things that are readily acceptable in Yankee Stadium or Fenway don't necessarily need to translate to Wrigley Field.

Are you seriously, and I mean seriously, comparing labeling professional athletes who make millions and play at the highest level with peoples young children including my future son or daughter?

If I overheard someone mentioning that my 8 year old son "sucked" that would surely be different in my mind, than fans chanting derisively when an opponent comes into the game to bat or pitch.

Once again, are you SERIOUSLY making this leap in argument?

For one, Dusty appeared just as insulted as the other two from the quotes I read. Two, I've only seen coaches or managers make requests to crowds for changes in behavior. Three, he is the only person I saw quotes attributable to the acquisition of players, which is a responsibility he shares in part with Hendry. Thus, if the booing is detrimental in that respect, I would expect more responsibility in taking action from him than Dempster or Lee.

What does the word "Sucks" come from? I understand that the ballpark isn't church but it isn't a stripclub either.

That's what is great about this country. We can disagree. And I vehemently disagree that "sucks" is a vulgar word.

My concern about that idea isn't whether Wrigley would be justified to do that; I know that that have the right. But enforcing it would be like the seatbelt law. It's a good idea to follow it, maybe a couple people will change, but ultimately there won't be any enforcement. I see really no change for the price of Wrigley being labeled as some "G-rated playground run by prudes," as unfairly as that would be. . .

You can't enforce such a thing. Such requests are made in the hope that people will feel embarrassed by their actions and respond accordingly. People just need reminders on behavior sometimes. Where is the harm? At worst, the fans continue with the same behavior. At best, some, if not all, stop.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Yes, I'm absolutely serious. Hawkins had family members present for the games. Again, booing, okay, the "Haw-kins" "Haw-kins" chant okay. "Hawkins sucks" not okay, whether his folks were there or not. My point is I don't think his family views him as a "million dollar player", but family. That's what I was comparing it to. Plus, what's the overall purpose other than showing that we had a bunch of drunk people in the stands Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning. I don't know about you, but thus far, I view Derrek Lee as one of the most classy individuals. When he says anything negative, I generally have to listen.
