"The Sandberg Game" on WGN Radio (Aug. 1st)

I haven't seen this posted anywhere but WGN radio will be re-airing the radio broadcast of the "Sandberg Game" on Monday night, August 1st at 7:00. This is being done in honor of Ryno's induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday. The announcers covering the game that day were Harry Caray, Lou Boudreau, and Vince Lloyd.

That's right! The game was televised on NBC, so Harry did the whole thing on radio; which means, of course, no Milo Hamilton! Lord, that guy was dull!

 

I find it interesting that there's not a single sign in his hometown of Fairfield, Iowa, mentioning that he's from there, despite the fact that he's a Hall of Famer.

 

I've always felt a little bad about calling it the "Sandberg Game." Sure, Ryno had a great day on national TV, going 5 for 6 with 7 RBI and hitting two game-tying homers off Bruce Sutter.

 

But what about the ultimate hero that day, Dave Owen? He's the one who had the game-winning hit, and that's really all he did in his career. Sandberg's had plenty of accolades, so from now on I'm calling it the "Owen Game."

This week-end, on Sat. night I believe. As I remember the broadcast, Bob Costas was reading the credits and saying good-bye to everyone when Ryno connected in the 9th.

There's a number of games I'd love to have video copies of.

 

1. The "Sandberg" (or "Owen") game

2. The slugfest between the Cubs and Phillies (something like 24-21)

3. Kerry's 21 SO game

 

and if I thought about it enough there has to be more games than that!

Didn't WGN radio broadcast a few Cubs games from the previous season on Christmas in 1998 or 1999 or so?
