that must just be a pipe dream on Florida's part....cause I was under the impression that the Skankees made it VERY clear that he's not going anywhere and will be replacing Torre on down the line.

I think Girardi would be allowed to leave at the end of the year like Randolph was allowed to leave NYY. However, the NYY may not let him go at this point in the season.

 

On another note, I would love to see Dusty let lose and Girardi brought on, but the timing would be lousy. I just hope Girardi is still around at the end of the year. He would make an excellent coach and the opportunity to coach the Cubs would probably be his dream job, unlike Baker who left his heart in San Francisco.

The article also mentions Braves thirdbase coach Fredi Gonzalez who is someone I'd like to see the Cubs consider if and when Baker is replaced.

Personally, unless the Cubs job opens up, I don't think Girardi will be interviewing for any jobs as manager....but I could be wrong, but I think Girardi will either be the Yankees or Cubs manager by 2007.

Wasn't he one of the candidates to take the Cubs' open manager's spot back in the '02/'03 offseason?

Yes, but I think Jim already had his mind set on Baker. Had they not been able to work something out with Dusty, he might have been the leading candidate.
