My feeling is that a package of Hill, Patterson, and Mitre would likely get a deal for Dunn....well...done.

From what I'm hearing, that's not enough. OBrien is really playing up the fact that he doesn't have to trade Dunn. It's believed they can work Dunn into the budget for next year. He does realize he will likely get more for him now that at any other time, but he's asking for a lot!

Hill and Mitre haven't proven enough yet and Patterson's value is at his lowest.

Okay, here's my package:

Murton, Patterson, Mitre, Dopirak and Aardsma for Dunn and Weathers.

Does that sound like it would work, Vance?

Trick is, the 'Stros won't give what they want, so we don't have to top it, just be in the ballpark.

What would really own here would be a 3 team trade it seems.

Such as

Cubs get Adam Dunn, high ceiling position prospect from Braves (have no clue who that would be, don't follow their system)

Reds get Corey Patterson, Sergio Mitre, good pitching prospect from us, and a couple of "relatively high ceiling, but no sure thing" pitching prospects from Braves.

Braves get Greg Maddux and cash

Braves need pitching, we get them Greg back for the big reunion thingie. So what if we pay him some cash to play there, we're out the $ anyway. We get Adam freaking Dunn and a good prospect. Don't give up anything we can't live without. Hairston becomes permanent fixture at CF, slide Dunn into left, and we're going to kick some tail. Let Glendon move into the rotation.

I think the braves are on a budget this year, unlike in decades past, so maddux probably won't go to them unless we paid a significant portion of his remaining salary.

btw, i don't think you trade a guy like Maddux in the second half of the season where he is solid...not to mention that he comes with extensive playoff experience.

A lot would depend on how much Cincinnati values Murton, Mitre, and Aardsma.

Backe's success last year down the stretch has elevated his value regardless of how he's performed this year. My guess is that the Reds would ask for a different group of players. The feeling I got was that their offer would change depending on who they were dealing with. So just offering comparable to what Houston rejected doesn't likely get it done. Considering we have a stronger farm, they are likely going to try to take advantage of that and ask for more.

My guess is that they'd take Patterson but will ask for Pie. They're going to want Williams or Mitre or both and at least one top pitching prospect. I'm thinking Hill or Gallagher, maybe Marshall. Aardsma projects to a reliever and I think they have an Aardsma is Wagner. I don't know if they have interest in Dopirak.

Actually, that's incorrect. The Reds aren't treating this like an auction where highest bid wins. They're treating it like a high priced retail store. They set the price and if you want to pay, fine....but if not, then they'll just wait for another buyer.

OBrien doesn't feel he has to move Dunn. If you want him, pay the price, if not they'll keep him or sell him to someone who will pay the price. So, assuming that you just have to have the best offer is a fallacy.

I like Dunn, but I still say he is not worth stripping the Cubs of 5 players under 25 years old. I would love to see the Cubs win the WS in the next few years, but to restock another team's future is silly. Knowing the Cubs, they would trade 5 players for Dunn and lose in the playoffs this year and next and then lose Dunn to free agency and watch the Reds overtake us with the 5 players we traded to them.

In an ESPN.com chat, Steve Phillips "suspected" that the Reds would want a ML ready pitcher, nearly ready pitcher, and possibly a position prospect in exchange for Dunn. Personally, I think a package of Mitre, Wellemeyer, and an infield prospect is sufficient to help clear the Reds' outfield logjam, but I think that they might at least one prospect with a fairly high ceiling.

A lineup of:

Hairston

Walker

Lee

Dunn

Ramirez

Burnitz

Barrett

Perez

P

would follow

Any thoughts?

LOL -- I'll clue you in, since the others haven't.... Dunn has been the object of obsession by this board all year. Hardly a new suggestion -- you could just bump any of the 100,000 other threads on this topic to continue the homage to all things Dunn.

First, isn't that just the type of players I said here?

Spoke with my source and he says info is harder to come by with Pupura than it was with Hunsicker.

Either way, apparently, the Astros turned down the Reds first proposal. The Reds wanted the Astros to part with Backe, Lane, and a minor league pitcher believed to be Patton. The Astros felt that was too expensive and said no. It doesn't mean there won't be a deal, but my source seems to believe the Reds are asking more than anyone is willing to part with.

Apparently they want one young established major league pitcher, one established position player, and at least one top shelf minor league pitcher.

Looks like my sources are as good as Steve Phillips. :P

And Mitre and Wellemeyer no matter who the infield prospect is, will not be enough. Think Mitre, Patterson (or Pie) and whoever the Reds view as the best pitching prospect in our system.

And can we keep all Dunn discussions in the same thread.
