Rumor is Eric Byrnes is going to be traded soon, possibly to Pittsburgh for Craig Wilson. Some are speculating that Adam Melhuse might be included since he's a real solid back-up catcher, which isn't really necessary when you have Jason Kendall.

I heard on Sporting News Radio on the way into work tonight that Byrnes is going to Colorado in exchange for Joe Kennedy and a prospect. It is Kenny Rosenthal, so take it for what it's worth, it was also announced in the update that the Preston Wilson deal to Washington was done with Wilson and cash going to Washington, and Zach Day and a minor leaguer or two to Colorado

Peter Gammons is reporting that the A's might trade Payton to the Yankees.

Anyone know what Oakland's motivation for this deal is? Looks like a pretty dumb move by Beane.

a prelude to dealing byrnes?

Is Gammons ever right?

wow, i found this little blurb on Ben Maller:

"Jay Payton admitted last night that he intentionally confronted Terry Francona in the visitors dugout at Ameriquest Field on July 6 in hope that it would free him from his undesired role as the Red Sox' fourth outfielder and hasten his departure. Payton got in a shouting match with the Sox manager during the late innings of a game vs. Texas after fearing that he would miss getting an at-bat due to a double-switch with John Olerud, who was also inserted into the game at the same time. In full view of the bench, he got in an exchange with Francona that was so heated the team immediately designated Payton for assignment and refused to allow him to accompany the team to Baltimore. General manager Theo Epstein immediately traded him to Oakland for relief pitcher Chad Bradford"

guys like Payton must be a real pleasure to have on a team.

Payton has been a huge spark for Oakland just as they started to make their amazing run. Funny too how Payton would likely have been the starting RF for the rest of the season after Trot Nixon got hurt had he stayed in Boston.

I actually like Jay Payton alot and wish the Cubs had taken a chance with him - he's certainly making a point that he can indeed be an everyday player.

3 weeks of good play does not make up for a career of suckiness.

Oh please - I didn't say he was a great player or anything, but his career has been far from "sucky."

His career OPS is .003 points higher than Todd Hollandsworth. We don't need another Hollandsworth on this team. Just because he has a great 3 weeks doesn't mean he is an everyday player or would've been the solution to our problems. Hollandsworth had a great 3 months last year and the Cubs decided he could play everyday. How did that work out?
