I heard a couple guys on the local sports station in Boston mention the Cubs and Yankees as potential suitors for Jay Payton. I caught only a brief part of the conversation so I couldn't tell if this was an actual rumor or something they just happened to think might work.

Anyone closer to the Cubs or Chicago media heard anything at all about this?

Payton will be traded to Oakland for Chad Bradford. The deal is likely to be finalized today.

I've heard that as well. Payton wants to go somewhere he'll get regular playing time. That's why he had problems in Boston. He wasn't seeing the light of day trying to get time in an outfield that already included Manny Ramirez, Johnny Damon, and Trot Nixon.

The prospect of being part of a team and possibly winning a World Series Championship ring wouldn't be enough for me to stick around either...

I can't believe the Red Sox are too upset with his departure.

That's why moving him to Oakland doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless Oakland is planning on moving one of theirs. It's no ManRam, Damon, and Nixon OF, but they have Kotsay, Kielty, Byrnes, and Swisher already. Payton is not a significant upgrade over any of them and is likely to be just as disgruntled.

That was the original rumor I heard going on as soon as he was designated for reassignment so I was surprised the other day when I heard the Cubs mentioned. My guess is since I only caught part of the conversation they were probably only trying to come up with teams where he would get his chance to start rather than be a 4th outfielder.

The Oakland thing does seem odd to me in that it's likely he won't get any more playing time there than he did in Boston, but I guess he doesn't have any say in where he gets traded to.

I do know that he was pretty vocal in Boston and apparently rumor has it he got in Francona's face about playing him or trade him near the end.

Also, when the rumor of Payton going to the A's originally surfaced, many believed it was a sign that Kotsay would be moved. Now we know Kotsay is staying, so it does add some doubt to the fact.

Payton isn't a guy I'd want. Apparently his being DA'ed was a result of a confrontation with Francona over playing time. This is not a personality you want on the team.

Yea, cuz the Cubs are doing so well with the boy scouts currently on the roster.

That said, at this stage in his career I don't know if he is that much of an upgrade over Corey.

At one time though, he was more highly touted than Nomar when they were both at Ga Tech.

payton is actually going to get less playing time in oakland than he did in boston - at least, as long as byrnes is there.

I'm having a real hard time understanding this deal from Oakland's perspective. Bradford is a good reliever(if healthy). Even if they felt that his value was at it's peak, why would they take on another platoon corner OF?

We are talking about the same Jay Payton who has a non-coors 320 OBP and sub 400 slugging? Who is he supposed to be an upgrade over?

Jay Payton is the Poster Child for the Juiced Player Era.

I thought he was the poster child for the crappy player who has never done anything to earn one mention by Cubs fans when discussing possible trade targets. If he did steroids, he had the wrong prescription, because outside of Coors, he's sucked his entire career.

Anyone know what Oakland's motivation for this deal is? Looks like a pretty dumb move by Beane.

a prelude to dealing byrnes?

Kielty is better than Payton though. And even if he wanted a platoon partner since Kielty can't hit righties, he's got Thomas and Cust in AAA for no player cost, and they won't be any worse than Payton. The only way that you can justify this deal is if Beane turns Payton into a player/reliever better than Bradford, which I don't think is possible.

Okay, I'm going to throw something really silly out there.

I know it's not the NFL, but is it completely out of the realm of possibility that Beane would still trade Kotsay despite the extension?

-Hendry didn't want to trade for a rental, but wanted a longer term solution

-Hairston is definetly not an organizational favorite

-Peyton is really, really redundant for Oakland as they stand right now.

-Oakland doesn't really need Kotsay this year unless they really think they are going to challenge for the WC.

So is it dumb that Hendry asked Beane to extend Kotsay before dealing for him? Did Oakland give Kotsay a NTC?

I don't quite understand this trade either - Payton has already let it be known that if he isn't a regular, he's going to be vocally unhappy which nobody wants on a ballclub. If he were going to ride the pine, why not do it in Boston where at least he has a chance for a WS ring.

I have to believe Oakland has something else in the works.

Normally in that situation the A's would give the Cubs permission to negotiate an extension with Kotsay on their terms. The A's gave Kotsay a NTC through 2006 per Rotoworld.

I know it's not Hendry's M.O. to negotiate during the season, so I thought maybe Beane did it for him. The NTC, however, kind of bursts my bubble unless it was the sort of thing where Beane and Kotsay agreed on certain teams they could shop him to.

Dang, too. Kotsay was about the only feasable upgrade out there (I don't think Dunn is available.)

Rumor is Eric Byrnes is going to be traded soon, possibly to Pittsburgh for Craig Wilson. Some are speculating that Adam Melhuse might be included since he's a real solid back-up catcher, which isn't really necessary when you have Jason Kendall.

I heard on Sporting News Radio on the way into work tonight that Byrnes is going to Colorado in exchange for Joe Kennedy and a prospect. It is Kenny Rosenthal, so take it for what it's worth, it was also announced in the update that the Preston Wilson deal to Washington was done with Wilson and cash going to Washington, and Zach Day and a minor leaguer or two to Colorado
