But on that list, I bet these are the ONLY legit OFers they could land. Whether teams are not ready to sell (TB, Oak, NYY), or propsects to move for an OFer (Kearns,Dunn,Huff), or whatever the case is. Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if they ended up with Jody Gerut or Matt Lawton.

Based on one Cards fan poster's sig, I'm guessing Vernon Wells might be a possibility.

I don't see the Blue Jays giving him up. On the other hand. IF that happens? Lookout, because on one in baseball will touch the Cards.

I won't be surprised to see Walt make a major trade for the outfielder we need. We aren't looking for just a rent-a-player for this season. We are looking for somebody to be a starting OF next season and beyond. It's really hard to speculate about who Walt might get, but he is a trade master. It's probably unlikely, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Walt goes big and gets Matsui, Mench, Wells, or someone of that caliber.

What is the motivation to trade Matsui or Mench from their respective teams?

I'd say its incredibly unlikely they'd come here either as well.

I agree why in the world would their current teams want to get rid of them when they are already being productive for them, it wouldnt make sense.

Their motivation would be to get young pitching. I don't mean necesarily those three players. I was using them as examples of the kind of impact players that Walt might get. Those just happen to be the three players I would most like to see in a Cardinals uniform.

I think I'm going to give Walt a call, and inform him that Preston Wilson is available.

Put the phone down and nobody gets hurt. :D

And what young pitching would you have the Cards give up? Because I look at your cupboard as being farely bare and what little you do have to give up, parting with now would only further hurt you down the line. What players are you willing to give up and/or would you realistically see being traded for an "impact player"?

If you were talking Kaz Matsui, then I would tend to agree. But seeing as you are talking about Hedeki Matsui, then I would disagree. The Yanks ARE NOT known to have either patience for young player (with exceptions), nor is Steinbrenner going to sign off on a "white flag" type deal. And any move that requires trading Hedeki Matsui, would be consider "white flag." And if Steinbrenner were interested in trading Matsui, the Cards would have to give up both Wainwright, and Reyes, something I know the Cards won't do.

On Mench: a productive, CHEAP, 27 yr old OF, will not be cheap, thus, he would prolly would cost the Cards; Wainwright and Hawksworth. I personally believe the Cards may target a platoon player to go with Walker---who has officially broken down. And then look at OF options after the season. Or the could take a look at Rick Ankiel for RF, if they want to be cheap. :-#

All this Hideki trade talk is moot. He has a no-trade clause, and he'd go back to Japan to play (which he can't do until after this season) before he waived it.

Anthony Reyes, Adam Wainright, Blake Hawksworth, Stuart Pomeranz, Chris Lambert, Brad Thompson, maybe even Jason Marquis.

It takes a lot to get a big-time player. I think Walt is prepared to do that. We are looking at losing both our corner outfielders next season. This season we have a RF who can be great when healthy, but who can only play part time because of his age. I don't think it's likely that he will trade both Reyes and Wainright, but he will likely trade one of them along with some combination of other pitchers on that list. Or we could see Marquis traded. You always sort of grin and bear it when your team parts with young pitching. But we need an outfielder, so it's a risk we need to take.

If the Cardinals end up with Aubrey Huff I'm not sure what I'd do.

I'm sure it would involve at one point or another sobbing, drinking, smashing things, drinking more, crying, calling up Cardinal fan friends and cursing them, and drinking more.

side note: Vaball, as hard as it is for me to say, you're a good poster even if you're a Cardinals fan - its actually fun hearing a differnet opinion.

But onto the subject, I really dont think Hendry would acquire Wilson. Most of the names I have heard in exchange are Cedeno, Hill, players the Cubs will not want to part with. Especially Hill, after the Cubs brass watching Dontrelle Willis have so much success.

Has anyone counted out the idea that we will acquire a pitcher instead of a hitter?

Thank you very much. I enjoy posting here a great deal. I wish there were a Cardinals forum as good as this one.

Agree 100%

And as far as Trades go, if we get Venon Wells, I don't know what I'd do. Walt is going to do something, but as usual we won't see it coming.

If we get Wells, Dunn, or Mench I will just totally freak out. I actually couldn't sleep last night because I lay awake thinking about who we might get and getting all excited about it (not in that way).

Also, when I go to sleep and think back on the day in baseball I find myself thinking, "I can't believe we actually have Albert Pujols." It's like some kind of prayer in a way.

sounds like you may have take in some gunpowder fumes by accident ;)

Albert is a nice centerpiece to the lineup isn't he.

I'm not trying to hate on the Cards, but I seriously don't see them acquiring an EVERYDAY OFer before the deadline, mainly because you still have Walker. Walker can still be productive in a PLATOON situation. So acquiring somebody like a Wells, who is a starter, just to platoon him, MAY not sit well with that person. I fully believe the Cards will end up with an Eric Byrnes/Matt Lawton type player. Disappointing if I was a Cards fan (but the Cards are not getting a BIG time OFer this deadline, cause I don't see any available). And would it really be dissapointing if you Walker/Lawton/Sanders platooning LF/RF?

Not to be argumentative, but as a Cubs fan, I'd hope you get Wells.

Reggie Sanders is having a far better year than Wells.

Larry Walker is having a better year than Wells.

Edmonds is, of course, better than Wells.

So Taguchi, when he gets to play, has been playing better than Wells.

Right now Wells is playing like he did in 2002, not like he did in 03 and 04. Dunn and Mench would be offensive upgrades, but Wells would just be a nice bench player on this year's Cards.

They very well might get a guy like you suggest. We could use more right handed power off the bench and somebody who can pinch hit since we have the worst pinch hitting in the league or something like that.

But if they do get a big name guy before the deadline he can still get a lot of playing time because TLR sits both Walker and Reggie a lot because of their age. He could alternate between left and right. So as long as the guy is willing to put up with that for half a season it would be okay. Then next year Walker will be gone and maybe Sanders and he would get all the time in one of those corner spots. This season it will be a little like too many cooks in the kitchen, though, I agree.
