I didn't notice a minor league thread to put this, but I just saw Brailyn Marquez stats so far for 2023, and it looks impressive.

8 games between Rookie ball and AA, 2 starts, 34 Batters Faced, 8+ IP, 4 hits, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 10Ks

I'd love to see this guy finally stay healthy and be a part of the roster next season

I split this out into its own topic. The NSBB folks roll their eyes at me but I really encourage people to start a new topic if they want to talk about something and don’t see a relevant thread. It spurs discussion and makes a forum more readable for newer and/or sporadic users.

So, good news on Marquez is that he's back on the mound.  That's really the best news here.  He's on the mound, and he's throwing.  The velo reports are not what you'd love to hear; 101mph in the 5th inning just isn't there any more, and it's likely not coming back.  Last go he was clocked in around 93-94mph.  He's showing more of a 3/4rs/sidearm type of delivery than in the past which might help with some deception.  There's probably a bit more velocity to clock in somwhere, as he gets his feet under him, but probably only a bit.

The one thing I'll say is this; the Cubs have had a knack of saving "dead" prospects here.  Justin Steele, Miguel Amaya, and Adbert Alzolay were all, essentially, dead prospects and they're playing important roles on the roster right now.  Cole Roederer is being resurrected at this moment as well in Tennessee.  Brailyn Marquez can still be something.  Maybe it's going to be a 7th inning arm instead of the 100mph flame throwing #2 in the rotation he looked like might have been in 2019, but hey, something is always better than nothing.

(and please, remember this when we think of Brennen Davis.  He's not dead yet either).

This might be a dumb question, but would you “throw in” Brennan Davis with Stroman if that’s what it took to get, say, Curtis Mead from Tampa? Or is there any realistic scenario where that type of deal makes sense? Or do you think thats giving up on Davis too quick, and it could burn us down the road? I just feel like if you don’t believe in Davis anymore that this might be the best opportunity to get a pretty elite prospect back. He could be enough, added with Stroman, to put a deal over the top for an elite prospect. Somebody might think there’s still upside there, which it might be. I personally don’t believe in him, but as you said, at one point nobody believed in Amaya and that group anymore either. Just throwing out a thought.

I'm just guessing, but I think no deal would be hung up over a Brennen Davis addition today.  If I'm trading with the Cubs, and I need an extra something to get a trade over the line, Davis isn't the guy I'm targeting.  If I wanted an OF'er to get over the line, Cole Roederer probably is more interesting than Davis, for example, and would function as a last piece sweetner.  Conversely, if I'm the Cubs, I'm not sure I'm just giving Davis for free like that too, if I still believe in the upside.

I think there's upside in Davis aplenty; and while the batted ball data was weak, the bat to ball skill was showing much improved.  If you can find the middle ground between "can't hit anything in and up" and "can make contact on most everything but can't hit with authority" Davis profiles as a starting OF'er.  But as a team trading for him, you'd have to find that middle ground and hope the health came back and that's too much volatility for his inclusion to be the difference in completing a trade, and not completing that trade.

Makes total sense. I didn’t know if his prospect pedigree just a short time ago would be more appealing than a guy like Roederer. I guess pedigree really doesn’t have much to do with it though. Teams probably wouldn’t care about that much at this point. Davis is still only 23, so there’s time. Personally I wouldn’t mind a sweetener like a Roederer, for example, to get a Mead type of prospect, along with Stroman. I feel like it close to the point where that’s acceptable with so many OF options. Happ and Suzuki are here now, but guys like PCA, Alcantara, Caissie, Canario, Perlaza, Davis, Roederer are all near ready and different levels of intriguing obviously.
