WTF this literally pisses me off.  For all the crap Cubs fans get about Bartman, the only people I hear talk about him are fans of other teams and it's been that way since pretty much mid-October 2003.  Feel free to celebrate the 2003 NLCS win when the Cubs are in town but leave Bartman out of it, you poverty organization.  It's not being edgy its offensive.

I mean it's not offensive, they won a series, no one died or anything.  Given their broader situation it does have real strong 'please pay attention to me' vibes though, which makes it more dumb than anything.

I just think Bartman should have never been the story.  He ended up being the story but why continue to bring up the name of a random fan who was one of several fans trying to grab a foul ball and has requested to be left alone?  There are so many better ways to frame a 2003 NLCS Celebration.  Hell if they called it "Alex Gonzalez error appreciation day" I'd be ok with it (though I get that doesn't roll off the tongue nearly as well), or maybe like celebrate one of your players from that team instead of a random fan.

Chicago media made it a story.

This doesn't bother me at all. Glad that's all they have to hang their hat on

I figure there's nothing Bartman himself could do legally if he was bothered enough by this, which seems a little odd to me.

Like, if you're a player, I figure there's some completely exploitative clause in their contracts or whatever that make player days a thing that can happen whether they want it or not, but what about a regular dude like Bartman? Would the Marlins org have to approach him and get him to sign off, or pay him for it? Or is he just SOL since this he became a "public figure" whether he liked it or not?

Not a lawyer, but if he wanted to go after them my guess is he'd have decent standing for them profiting off his likeness without consent considering the use of his name and caricature in a promotion.
