I'm bullish on Fields of course, but guys have to get open. While I also expect a new scheme to open, he's still gonna need help. Unless you're super bullish on Mooney (I'm moderately so), I don't know.

I mean if it was so easy and so QB dependent, Mecole Hardman would be right there with those guys too right? It's asking a lot when it doesn't have to be.

Yeah, I didn't want to imply that if Fields is good it won't matter. They are stacking the deck against him, big time. Putting a lot of stock into the coaching and scheme. I understand going with upside around the upside of Fields, but I'd like at least 1 sure thing on the line. That's why I wanted them to go hard after Laken Tomlinson. They seem to value people that "know the system" and he's become a guy that you put in the lineup and you don't have to worry about that spot. Even if they get Ryan Bates from Buffalo, you're still looking at tackles you aren't sure about, Whitehair who has been mediocre for a couple years, Lucas Patrick and Bates who have upside and tenacity you look for, but neither has ever been a full-time starter. Then you throw in the weapons and while Mooney is probably a sure thing with 1000 yards last year and working out with Fields all winter, I'd love a guy that could give them some solid reps if a rookie isn't ready to play right away. But as of now, this is probably the least talented offense in the NFL, outside of Houston, and they have the best lineman and WR of the 2 teams.

When you look at elite QBs they know where to place the ball to receivers who are not necessarily open. They seem to have the ability to throw the ball so that only the WR has the opportunity to catch it. Fields needs to be hyper-accurate with his throws if he's going to be an elite QB. Obviously, you need sticky-handed WR to make those catches too.

Hope the Bates thing happens. He's young enough (25) that he could be a long-term option at RG. I'd love for them to add a Will Fuller for cheap. I believe Browns have interest w/ Watson there, but I heard 5M+ incentives. And of course, I'm still down to trade for Brandin Cooks or Tyler Lockett (DK seems like a pipe dream).

While I don't want to discount Fields ability to grow into a more anticipatory passer I think the best version of him is gonna be more a see open throw passer than an anticipatory guy. If he miraculously becomes Rodgers, getting the ball out quickest in the league and creating separation with timing, that's amazing, but for all his talent that isn't his game right now.

Bates still seems like a swing IOL guy at best. Think they need a solid swing T and then maybe a cut candidate at G before the draft.

That would allow them to focus on one big OL draft pick, but with position versatility

Jenkins, Whitehair, Patrick, Bates, Borom

Swing T, Vet G, Rookie, Mustipher

That's barely an acceptable top 9 I guess. But could have made a bigger investment above the Bates role and tried to let Whitehair get beat out.

That's never going to be his game, and it doesn't really matter either. Mahomes isn't an anticipation thrower. Watson is not. I think they will focus a lot on him getting rid of the ball in camp, just so that he can develop that skill. But his bread and butter will be the ability to hang in the pocket (or escape the pocket) and waiting for the big play to happen.

Please tell me there's a RT named Mann available in the draft

They signed Dakota Dozier yesterday, so that's probably your Vet Guard for the bench. He gave up 6 sacks and committed 6 penalties when he started in 2020 for the Vikings (he's terrible). Lot riding on Patrick and Bates being able to play and Jenkins/Borom developing into really good players, really fast.

A guy who spent the whole year on the PS is definitely not what I mean.

Maybe more of a post draft cut candidate like Leno was last year. But some solid vet will get cut pre draft maybe.

Slightly Bears related.

I just found out DK Metcalf is the son of former Bear Terrence Metcalf.

He obviously had him young, but I'm struggling to recover from this news re: my advanced age.

damn it took you this long?

i think he grew up a huge bears fan too. i saw some story where it was the 2006 season that inspired him to take up football.

It's always funny to me when the father/son are like completely different body types. Like different positions is not a big deal. But when you have big offensive lineman dad and the son is a WR (granted, DK is freaking huge as well) and a huge athletic difference, it kinda blows my mind. Like Ironhead and Cam Heyward. Ironhead was 5'11", Cam is 6'5". And then he has a brother in this draft (10 years younger) that's 5'11" like the dad. Like where the hell did Cam come up with 6 extra inches (pause).

Feel free to demand a trade here to try to recreate the 2006 season

look on the bright side, this indicates Poles has good taste in free agents and values them appropriately

on the other hand this roster is hot garbage and the odds that Fields survives year 2 as a Bear are dangerously close to coming off the board.

I'm not sure going after RFA's being your go-to plan for the offensive line is in fact "on the bright side". Poles is good, right? why dont I feel like he's been good to date?
