Winkler gone, Hermosillo up

The Cubs have selected outfielder Michael Hermosillo to the big league roster, the team announced. Reliever Dan Winkler was designated for assignment to open space on the active and 40-man rosters. Additionally, Chicago announced that left-hander Kyle Ryan has elected free agency after being passed through outright waivers.

 

Would also be fine with Meisinger and Jewell getting booted for Mekkes and Leeper.

I guess I didn't know much about Hermosillo before this season (had a few not-great cups of coffee) but he was a top 20 prospect for the Angels for a few years and he's still only 26. He's mashed in Iowa so maybe there's something there. At the very least maybe he's a decent 4th OF.

Hermosillo was probably the funnest of the AAAA guys they got for Iowa last winter, and has been crushing it so far this year.

 

The contact rate is certainly sub-optimal, but he's got power, speed, and patience. He's probably Jake Marisnick with roughly twice as many walks. That's not particularly exciting, but like a lot of these guys that's a high end bench player.

Fun (?) fact: Hermosillo was committed to Illinois for football before being drafted/signing.

Another fun fact, I refereed two of Hermosillo's football games at Ottawa. He was a stud RB in H.S..
