I don't really see how it's fair to be livid.

Also most of those people at realGM are insane.

Toolsy guy we took fourth overall in a very weak draft. Who knows. We'll see what happens.

It seems that he had more upside than most in this draft. Since it is a weak draft why not take a high upside guy?

Correct

Hard to criticize any thought out approach in a weak draft, really.

If they had gone with Toppin, for example, with the logic of it being a weak draft, why not get a guy almost guaranteed to be a rotation player for a few years - that would have been fine, too.

The lack of March Madness also made what was already a weak draft even harder for most of us to evaluate. In past years, March Madness was a great way to help shake out the draft from an outsider's perspective, particularly with toolsy-yet-unproven guys who would either step up to the plate or who would falter on a national stage. I think more of us would have had a positive opinion of Williams if we had seen FSU in the tournament, but I get the sense that most of us didn't watch a single FSU game this past season and instead are relying on expert opinions and YouTube clips to develop our own opinions of him.

Granted, evaluating players solely based on March Madness performance is a recipe for disaster, but, on the flip side, this draft will provide an interesting litmus test for the front office's ability to identify talent and for the coaching staff's ability to develop talent.

I think the main issue for fans with Williams is he was a late riser. All through the summer and stuff I'm not sure he was even being mocked as a late lotto pick.

But it's also been 7-8 months since these guys played meaningful basketball. Putting aside that it's supposed to be a weak draft, I think any in person workouts and meetings were likely hugely important this year.

I think people are putting too much into the "but he didn't start in college" thing. First of all he only played one season and if I'm not mistaken FSU was pretty deep. He was the 6th Man of the Year for the ACC. Plus the NBA drafts more on potential where a college coach is worried about the present for obvious reasons. That would be an issue in football, for sure. But I don't expect anyone in this draft to walk in day 1 and be a big time player.

Exactly.

I am no draftnik, but what I did read about this kid is that he's a great defender and relishes the work to get better. If anyone is going to morph into something out of this class, it's going to be someone like that. I'm fine with it.

Athletic's analysis of the pick:

Vecenie’s scouting report: Williams has risen in the minds of teams throughout the draft process. He ticks the boxes of being a potential two-way forward in an NBA that continues to crave them. As long as Williams knocks down 3s at a 35 to 37 percent level off the catch, he’s going to be a really high-level player for a long time. There’s a somewhat low-likelihood outcome of star upside, too. But I think he probably settles in more as a starting caliber 4.

Ranking: No. 9

Hollinger’s team fit: I understand the lure – Williams is the youngest collegian in the draft and had an alluring combo of size and perimeter skill, and he fits the roster. But I see more of a role player than a star here. I had Williams 14th on my board.

It's interesting that both seem to mostly dismiss the star upside. But then again, we all would admit the upside there but he's a project so relatively small shot of living up to that potential.

Hopefully he has that Jimmy Butler like development curve.

still think the Bulls should put him on the end of the bench and have him work with WC all year.
