Finally! This is what I've been waiting for.

Now I have to wait to see what kind of coverage/reports we will get out of South Bend. I need trackman and exit velo data. I need video. I need scrimmages. I need... well, what I need is an actual 140 game minor league baseball season, but I'll take what I can get!

That would bring the roster to 55 of 60. I’m hoping they add Burl Carraway and Manuel Rodríguez right now too.

Yeah, I'm hoping that this is a sign things are indeed going well in Camp from a health perspective. Hopefully that continues, and we can keep adding the two you mentioned, plus maybe a few of Jensen/Clarke/McAvene. Obviously that would require some cuts, but there's several fringey pen arms who if they're not worth making the MLB pen at the start of the season with expanded rosters are pretty easy cuts: Hultzen, Brothers, Adam, Gamez, Norwood, etc.

I'd also love to get a few more of the Myrtle Beach guys onto the roster. Roederer and Strumpf especially.

Burl will make 58/60, though I assume some MLB vets who don’t make the official roster this week will ask for and get their release rather than go to South Bend.

Sounds like Phegley, Miller, and Brothers all have a good shot at making the OD roster, which would require 40 man moves. So yeah I'd imagine we see 3 vets sent out (Descalso, Norwood, and one of Cotton/Tepera?), and the roster trimmed down to 55.

The South Bend roster is pretty light on position players, so I imagine after Carraway we see additions there...something like Giambrone, Rivas, and Roederer? Then save those last two slots for emergency?

Pevey had specific comments on Alzolay, Amaya, Davis, Márquez and Morel. The Davis stuff is great even though it’s likely over the top (considering Pevey has been around or coached Báez, Bryant, Jiménez, Rizzo, Schwarber and Soler).

Love the Morel quote too. 112 is some serious exit velo. Only 23 guys have done that even once this year. Pretty great for a guy who probably still has physical maturing left to do.

Not sure how much this helps in terms of allowing more trades to happen. Most of the stats are largely meaningless because of the difference in skill level/development and it's only intrasquad games. I guess accurate data on spin rates/velo for pitchers is meaningful and useful. Trades will definitely happen later this month, but it'll be PTBNL and most of the top prospects at these alternate sites won't be available in trades.

:beg: I believe this would get the team pretty close to having everyone relevant who was slated to be above South Bend playing. And while certainly not good, I tend to think the really young guys aren't being hurt as much spending a full year on mechanics and conditioning.

I forgot about Clarke, kinda underrate him due to the TJ, but he's got an interesting enough delivery and the curveball's got some potential... Maybe Sadler coming out hot softened me up...He and Uelmen probably belong over Gallardo, who probably can get away with being locked in a gym for 2020. Roberts might be the same case, use this year to get bigger

Tom, when did Clarke have TJ?

Here's what Dorey had to say about some of Chicago's young players:

Who have been the biggest surprises? Chris Morel and Brennen Davis, both being younger guys, stepping into this environment, have really stepped up to the challenge. I think both of them have made a lot of strides around these position players and really fit right in, both from a performance standpoint and just from a maturity standpoint. Those two guys have really turned a lot heads here. We all knew they were really good but they're facing Triple-A type pitching or major league depth pitching every single day. That's a huge step for them developmentally."

Who has taken advantage of the time? "We've had a lot of pitchers that have really thrown the ball well. I think Justin Steele's been doing really good, exciting things. Tyson Miller, who I know you guys had in Triple-A for a little bit last year and obviously got his major league debut. (Adbert) Alzolay has been really sharp. Some of the other guys that I think are really close are Michael Rucker and P.J. Higgins has been great. We all know of his defensive versatility but he's been swinging the bat really well."

If you'd like to hear someone gushing about how great Brailyn Marquez is, Dakota Mekkes does that a little bit on the newest episode of The Compound. Probably just a sign of what he would do if needed this year and not a long term decision having been made on him, but he did say Brailyn's working as a reliever at the South Bend camp (this also might have already been known).

edit - here is the relevant part
