BA mock:

1. Lawler

2. Rocker

3. Leiter

4. Mayer

5. de Castillo

Guys who have drawn interest from posters in here: Wood went 15, Watson 17, Fabian 22 (what a fall), Ford 25, Hurd 27, Petty 28.

21 Joe Mack, C, Williamsville East HS, East Amherst, N.Y.

BA pick: There are a significant number of toolsy preps on the board and I’ll take one of them here for the Cubs in Mack. Sure, Mack is a high school catcher and that demographic is among the riskiest you can pick from, but he also has the sort of bat that can profile at another position, which lessens the risk in my mind. Putting him with a team like the Cubs gives me some confidence, but the Northeast high school players could be difficult to place for a while longer.

Lawler better be the second coming of A-Rod because if I’m a GM I’ll be damned if I’m taking a high schooler over Leiter or Rocker. Those two guys could be getting major leaguers out right now. Leiter has only given up 7 hits in 30 innings!

Lawler isn't the second coming of A-Rod but you're not accounting for how risky pitcher's health is.

I'd probably still take one of the pitchers but it's not just about what you get now - you have to think about what you can get over their first 6 years in the big leagues.

Yep, I understand. Pros and cons each way. I think both Rocker and Leiter are special pitchers. It’s a coin flip but I’d probably go with Leiter if I had to choose. His mechanics look so fluid. He’s probably a lower injury risk than Rocker. His 120th pitch in his no hitter was like 97 or something crazy like that.

The Cubs bonus pool for the 2021 draft is $6,779,400, the 7th smallest pool in the draft.

1.21 $3,132,300

2.56 $1,276,400

3.93 $627,900

4.123 $464,500

5.154 $343,400

6.184 $263,700

7.214 $206,500

8.244 $168,500

9.274 $152,300

10.304 $143,900

Team can spend up to $125,000 on picks in the 11th through 20th rounds without it counting towards their bonus allotment. Any bonus above $125,000 comes out of the team's bonus allotment. As of last year, nondrafted free agents are limited to $20,000 bonuses.

I don’t subscribe but think I saw he was mocked 25th to Oakland? I would hope the Cubs at 21 don’t let that happen

The mocked Joe Mack to the Cubs at 21. I prefer Ford to Mack, but both are prep catchers with significant upside. I like Mack a lot as well. He’s got plus power (more pull side) right now and he’s got a strong accurate arm. If we’re being honest, I think BA didn’t want to have the exact same player mocked to the team that far into the draft. This mock was specifically designed to be a bit chaotic by Carlos Collazo. It would be a mix of BA and picks by a scout, but Collazo designed it so the Pirates wouldn’t take Leiter. It was BA who had the Cubs selection. I think they just picked the other first-round worthy HS C.

LSU is shutting down Jaden Hill’s season. Looks like Tommy John if you believe local reports.

Already dreading him being one of like 4 aces on the Dodgers in 2024

Confirmed:

Bertz, I’m with you. I hope the Cubs take him if he makes a Buehler-like fall.

Rocker’s dip in velocity — which could easily be temporary — and Jaden Hill‘s partially torn UCL have changed the complexion of the top of the board. Gunnar Hoglund of Ole Miss has emerged as the next best college pitcher, just one strikeout behind Leiter for the Division I lead, followed by Ty Madden of Texas, Ryan Cusick of Wake Forest and Miami of Ohio’s Sam Bachman, who hit 102 mph while building back up from a couple of missed starts, showing the stuff of a top 15 pick. California shortstop Marcelo Mayer joins Jordan Lawlar as the two high school players who are certain to go in the top 10. Boston College centerfielder Sal Frelick and Louisville catcher Henry Davis have impressed scouts this spring with their performances and middle-of-the-field positional value, and likely will be the first two college hitters off the board. As of now, I don’t think there’s a high school pitcher drafted in the top 10, and would peg seven guys as “locks” to go in the first 10 picks, in no particular order: Leiter, Rocker, Davis, Frelick, Lawlar, Mayer and Hoglund.

This is a good state of play from Keith Law's latest article this morning

Agree with everyone else. Make sure Hill will sign for something reasonable and then take him; TJS or not. That arm talent is something else.

I don’t pay too much attention to the “so called experts” ... I am sure these Mocks will changes 100 more times before draft day... The “mockers” just love to see big Velo numbers and actual scouts look for project ability ! But it’s fun watching how the list of names keep changing.....

21) Cubs: Harry Ford, C, North Cobb HS (Ga.)

Ford has an intriguing set of all-around tools, with the ability to really hit and the skills to stick behind the plate, though he’s quick and athletic enough to move elsewhere if needed.

^^ Make it stick, Cubs, unless someone else blows up!

CR, do you still follow UCLA's team? Any thoughts on JT Schwartz? I see a 6'4" LHH 1B with a 20:9 BB/K hitting .412/.526/.612, weirdly enough my main knock is that I'm still not a huge fan of RH 1B rather than the probably not elite IsoSLG. Can he play 1B or is he one of those hitters in the "totally definitely anyone can play 1B" bucket who can't play it well at all?

As I typed that checked out Jacob Teter's (6'6" L/L 1B) season...362/.516/.745 with a 14:11 BB/K in 64 PAs so far. He'll leave as a 4 year starter + hit some in the CCBL

He can definitely play 1B (he’s even dabbled at 3B in summer leagues). The power is new and hopefully that sticks but the biggest question is definitely health concerns.

21 James Wood IMG Academy, Bradenton, Fla. OF

Notes:

There’s been some chatter within scouting circles that Wood is sliding and his selection here by the Cubs could represent one of the bigger steals of the class. Wood has some of the biggest pure upside in the 2021 class thanks to his power potential, athleticism, bat speed and size—it wasn’t long ago that he was considered a potential top-five pick by some scouts. He performed well over the summer and showed power against top pitchers, but he’s shown more swing and miss than some scouts are comfortable with this spring. Perhaps this is a case of nit-picking or prospect fatigue, because as one upper-level scout put it, “if he didn’t swing and miss he would be going 1-1.”

Harry Ford went 18 to the Cardinals.

21. Cubs: Michael McGreevy, RHP, UC Santa Barbara

No college pitcher has more helium right now than McGreevy, who endears himself to clubs with his combination of pitch data, polish and performance. He struck out 15 while permitting just two hits and no walks against Cal Poly in his last start.

A college RH?! So two years ago

Cubs pass on Ford in this mock, Joe Mack is the first HS C off the board, de Castillo doesn’t go until pick 20 to the Yankees, other stuff

McGreevy sounds like a Cleveland Baseball Team pick.
