I can't imagine Floyd is a candidate for an extension.

It would basically require 1. Floyd really liking it here, 2. Pace saying he will be cut otherwise and 3. Floyd still really liking it here after that ultimatum.

Obviously he hasn't hit his potential as a pass rusher, but in the 7-9M per/year range, he'd probably be a good value.

That's my thought as well. He's got 13.2 guaranteed if the Bears keep him. But if he likes it here, he could probably be persuaded to take a 4 year deal worth like 30-35Mil with 18-20Mil in guarantees. Increases his guarantees, but also gives the Bears some needed cap space. The issue here is there's next to nothing on the FA market and a draft pick (which would be in the mid 2nd round area at best, mind you) isn't likely to make teams stop triple teaming Mack.

So, they might have to bite the bullet on Floyd and look to trade or get a potential comp pick for him after 2020

A healthy Hicks would in theory help with the pass rush.

But I could also be convinced to outright dump Floyd and throw a back loaded deal at Clowney. Has multiple seasons better than Floyd and, fun fact, is younger than Floyd. But I'd probably take a reasonably extended Floyd over that option. A trade is an interesting thought. I think on his deal he tops out at a mid third, but more realistically a day 3 pick.

I can't see Nagy giving up playcalling although he should. Helfrich might take the blame but he's a puppet. I'm leaning towards unloading Floyd, he's not worth his market value.

OK, doom bonering aside, here's the real approach to the offseason.

They're going to have to take some chances on unknown, younger guys and move on from some veterans who aren't terrible yet. The most understandable, common mistake in the NFL is holding on to guys a year too long, waiting until they become outright bad before bringing in fresh bodies to feed to the meat grinder. If they're lucky/good, they'll hit on more of those young bets than miss.

So with that in mind, I've come around on some of the cuts. Cap cuts: Amukamara, Floyd, Gabriel, decline to pick up Long's option.

Now you've got a ton of holes, but at least you do have some cap space to work with.

In terms of cap space or pick commitment, there's four spots that need to be the focus.

1) OG. Your interior line is absolutely awful and is the biggest thing holding the offense back besides Trubisky, who we can't really do anything about yet. Coward is an RFA and can go away forever. Whitehair is stuck because of his contract. Daniels is still only 22 and a recent 2nd-rounder, so he can stick around but he can't have a guaranteed job. So really, go get two veteran guards or one vet and one high pick.

2) TE. I'd like to have two, but I'm willing to give Burton another chance just to avoid having to spend too much of our resources on doubling up at a spot that is pretty weak in terms of what's available.

3) Edge rusher. It sucks to have to commit more to this position after everything we've done, but it's the truth. Floyd wasn't getting it done and Mack can't do it by himself these days. A pass rush is 100% not optional with this defense.

4) SS. Get a true SS to let Eddie Jackson go back to FS, no more of this double-FS garbage.

The rest of the moves you need to make, but can be a lesser priority:

1) QB2. It's a buyer's market, with way more guys out there than there are jobs. Granted, none of them are *good*, but you should be able to get one cheap.

2) A true RB2 to share carries with Montgomery. Cohen needs to be used as a gimmick receiver and long-down back, nothing more.

3) A cheap, young CB. I thought Toliver looked pretty adequate out there. This is a position we can afford to cheap out on so long as we fix the pass rush.

4) Various pieces of front-7 depth and an ILB starter, doesn't have to be anyone special or expensive.

Basically, what the Bears need to do is realize that they aren't just trying to recapture the magic of 2018 but everyone is two years older. The roster needs a large infusion of fresh bodies. It's not a "heck yeah, we're Super Bowl-bound!" offseason, but it hopefully improves the team and sets it up for continued growth in future seasons.

Theres nothing wrong with the double FS, a SS would be a run stuffer/TE cover guy anyway. Considering the D is ranked #6 against the run, they aren't missing the SS spot. The run D has suffered more form missing Hicks IMO (and really, so have the INT numbers). I'd like to see what Ha-Ha would resign for.

They need someone besides Mack and Hicks on the D line.

the rest is all O-line, back up RB, TE, and QB1A.

I mean the traditional SS is near dead. Any S today would be a FS 20 years ago, and any SS from 20 years ago is at best a hybrid player if not a LB (or just unemployed).

I'd be fine with Ha Ha, but that spot should definitely be a cost saving spot on the roster either way.

To Kyle's plan, I'd also say extend Robinson. You can probably knock off another 5M of cap at least with a new long term extension with new guarantees.

I have zero interest in a Robinson extension given my long-standing belief that all athletes over 25 are seconds away from going all Last Crusade choosing poorly. Just enjoy having him on a good deal without long-term commitment

This. F the run game. Cover people. The Bears have done pretty well in coverage considering Prince is losing a step, and the pass rush hasn't been consistent. Go after another hybrid S that can play both.

I'm all for upgrading Floyd for Judon and Prince for Byron Jones with bringing back Ha Ha back.

Use Long's contract to help get IL and draft a RT and TE with 1st 2 picks.

Judon is intriguing, but how are you going to get Jones out of Dallas?

He's an UFA.

Offseason in two words: Rinse, repeat

The Bears perpetually underwhelm. Every so often, they have a good year and raise hopes across the city. And then, seemingly without fail, the Bears don't live up to those expectations. The upcoming offseason is likely to have the same vibe. Many will expect the Bears to make the playoffs since the roster is talented. Fans will look past the obvious faults and cling to the belief that the Bears are just one or two lucky breaks away from being a Super Bowl contender. Then 2020 probably will end like most years for the Bears: without a trip to the postseason.

I don't see Judon getting more than ZaDarius Smith got (4/66). In fact, if the Bears are willing to cut bait with Floyd, I'd imagine his average salary will be pretty close to the 13Mil + that Floyd is due next season.

As for CB, I am typically NOT a fan of free agent CBs. CBs get paid a lot in the offseason. Guys like Amukamara (when he signed the first time) and Tracy Porter who don't break the bank are fine, but Byron Jones is going to get a ton of money. Pace hasn't drafted a CB before the last day of the draft, and of those who were college CBs, only Duke Shelley has stayed at CB in the NFL. I'd let Toliver battle with a 2nd round pick and Duke Shelley to see who gets the snaps along with Fuller and Skrine.

Hot take: with Mack and Smith in the bag, the Bears are better off spending big on a CB than a front 7 player or LBer

They already have big money at the last level tied to Fuller and will soon have big money tied to Jackson. Can't afford 3 10Mil dollar DBs in the near future

The front 7 already has pretty big deals to Mack, Smith, Goldman, and Hicks for 2020 too, right?

Maybe you guys should throw that money at Conklin the OT instead

Funny thing about that......the Bears also have 18.6Mil tied into the starting OTs, and that number goes up if they cut either of the two. Smith doesn't have a big deal though, rookie deal.

This is based on little more than intuition, but I feel like WRs with Robinsons profile get a pass until at least 29 for that.
