The Devils played a day game today. They got out to a 4-1 start, blew that lead to lose 6-4. They are 0-4-2

Very rough start for a team that started the season with a lot of (or maybe just some) high hopes.

Top pick Jack Hughes has zero point and a -3 rating through 5 games

Columbus has just 2 regulation losses in their last 20 games (14-2-4). They were completely left for dead, 12 points out of the playoffs, in early December. They now sit in the first wildcard, and just 2 points behind the Islanders for 3rd in the Metro.

All this with 8-10 players on the IR

I really like these emergency goalie stories, but can someone explain to me why they don't just grab their worst actual hockey player (on the roster), put him in pads, and stick him between the pipes? Not that I want this to go away because its cool, but when did they start this weirdness?

I can only assume it is because the skill is so much different from the skating players that there is no translation. A guy who plays goalie with regularity, even at much lower levels, can look the part a lot more than your typical 7th defenseman who never practices goalie (and shouldn't).

Have you ever played goalie? Better yet, can you even skate?

Goalie takes years to learn. A hard puck moving at 100 mph towards your grill will freak 99% of the population out, not to mention having to brace yourself in a perfect position while on two blades of steel. Literally any other position is easier to learn.

I went to the Devils game Saturday and saw Ovechkin's 700th goal. Pretty cool moment.

Anyway, I walked by a couple fans talking and heard "they can't trade everybody" as I passed by and though, "yes they can, and they should." I wish the blackhawks would wake up and do the same.

I can ice skate and I used to play roller hockey, and I had friends that played fairly competatively in high school and college. You can't tell me that probably half of their roster has some experience playing goalie when they were young. And THEY are the ones used to having 100 mph pucks shot at them, and that's without a goalie mask. Not sure that the rec leagues that these 40 year old, ex-college goalies are getting their reps in has prepared them for NHL slapshots. All that said, I can buy that they would fare better than Joe 4th line defender, but I'm most curious how teams were allowed to use non-rostered players in the first place.

Every kid on our mite team rotates through goalie, and our best skaters are the absolute worst at goalie. By the time they are 10 they will either play goalie or not. But having experience as a 12 year old and then suiting back up as a 25 year old is night and day.

Among the proposals may be reviving “house goalies,” an Original Six relic in which the home team was responsible for making sure a decent puckstopper was in the building for each game. At a time when teams were required to only carry one netminder, these standby goalies didn’t dress for the game but would leave their arena seats and head to the dressing room if either team’s netminder went down. The game was delayed until he could get his gear on and take warmup shots.

this is not someone who sucks at skating (the rest of what you say I totally agree with):

Did I say goalies suck at skating?
