cole hamels took off because his mechanics were off and he was reworking them leading up to the trade.

He had a 10.23 ERA and a 1.043 OPS allowed his final 5 starts with Texas. He allowed 7 ER in his final start, and then It took him 8 starts to give up 7 ER total with the Cubs.

he literally said it himself and it was evident on video. you can go ahead and argue pennant race magic instead, though.

nah, he just wasn't trying as hard in texas because he was bored in a potential free agent year.

Well, his .689 OPS at Busch bodes almost as poorly as his .627 OPS at Wrigley.

OPS better than KB's .621 in St Louis, and at least JL gets on base there hitting .295 with a .337 OBP for that OPS. They both have the same amount of hits in St Louis this year, but KB has 17 more AB

How many years was Cole's mechanics off? His final 50 starts with Texas he had....

4.63 ERA

4.50 xFIP

4.84 FIP

1.32 WHIP

Yes I said 50 starts, yet magically in 30 with the Cubs he's improved to a 2.64 over 30 starts with the Cubs.

Yes he sucked with the Rangers and has been great with the Cubs....are you trying to attribute a 2+ run drop in his ERA to the thrill of being on a winning team?

Man Descalso must really loathe winning

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/cubs/mechanical-change-has-cole-hamels-pitching-ace-again

Prior to Hamels arriving in Chicago, he had two underwhelming seasons in Texas where it seemed like the 34-year-old's best days had already passed him. And 2018 seemed like another in a slew of disappointing seasons, playing for a Rangers team that was essentially starting a rebuild, posting a 4.72 ERA in 20 starts and was on pace to allow the most home runs of his career.

But despite the poor results, Hamels felt like he was getting close to the guy he was from '14 to '16 as he battled back from a bad oblique tear that was forcing him to pitch entirely different. Hamels claims he came back a bit too early and wasn't quite able to replicate this pitching motion, which kept him from being able to hide the ball and lead to him being uncomfortable on the mound.

Yes then I took the chance to point out his hero KB has the same amount of hits as JL in St Louis this year which I know he didn't like.

He also compiled those numbers pitching in Coors Jr. compounded with an injury at some point and mechanical stuff. It’s not hard to see where the bounce came from.

"his hero KB"...just, you know, the team's best player during by far the best Cubs run in any of our lifetimes. That horsefeathers.

This move is fine. Lucroy was showing a few signs of life at one point this season.

Worst case scenario, he spells Caratini for a month or so until Contreras comes back. Then we cut him.

No risk, and some slight potential for a mild surprise.

Jesse Chavez...

4.51 ERA lifetime before Cubs, 1.15 with Cubs and now 4.36 post Cubs.

Now do Daniel Descalso.

Then do Carlos Gonzalez.

Then do Martin Maldonado.

Did he not pitch in Texas any of those first 32 starts with the Rangers when he had a 3.00 ERA?

Here is how Jesse Chavez performed on playoff teams before 2018:

2010 Angels - 5.89 ERA

2012 A's - 18.90 ERA

2013 A's - 3.92 ERA

2014 A's - 3.45 ERA

2016 Blue Jays/2016 Dodgers - 4.43 ERA

Must have taken him awhile to come around to the excitement of being on a winning team!

Cargo and Descalso aren't even playing let alone in pennant races and MM just won the World Series last year after going to Houston and has caught a no-hitter and has a 1.000+ OPS so far this time around with them.

He did. Then he strained his oblique, came back too soon, and all that other stuff I already posted about for you happened.

I’m assuming you’re talking about his first full year in Texas in 2016 since he made 32 starts then. He had a home ERA of 4.40 and road ERA of 2.40 in 2016. 4.52 vs 3.52 home vs road FIP. So yes it’s almost like getting out of that joke of a stadium, coupled with getting healthy and tweaking his mechanics led to the numbers improving.

Breaking: After a player gets traded (or really, just pick any date you want), they will either play better or worse then they had previously been playing. Historically, some have played better, while others have regressed. This has happened thousands of times in baseball history, and thus there are numerous examples on both sides, neither of which actually proves any sort of point. Hopefully everyone is having fun.

Just a heads up, the Astros won the World Series 2 years ago and Maldonado was not on that team.
