Its going to suck if they can't get Hendrie signed when they could have just taken a NCAA SR pitcher for a couple grand and had 140K to spend elsewhere, rather than waste a 10th round pick on nothing and missout of the 142,200 slot and the 5% they could go over on that.

I heard that Derek Jeter REALLY wanted this kid at #4 instead of taking JJ Bleday, but didn't want to overrule his other scouts and pull a "MJ as meddling owner/exec" move. He's already gotten so much bad press (and rightfully so). It's early, but the kid looks amazing so far and should make every Top 100 prospect list.

Regarding Wyatt Hendrie, I'm not sure what happened but I don't think it's a big loss if he doesn't sign. Yeah, the opportunity cost hurts and the Cubs could've spent that money on someone else. I'm curious to find out what happened (again, if he doesn't sign).

Anyone know why Wyatt Hendrie hasn't signed yet? I've looked on Twitter, but can't find a thing.

The two players in the first 10 rounds most likely to spurn pro contracts are Rangers seventh-rounder Brandon Sproat and Cubs ninth-rounder Wyatt Hendrie. A right-hander from Pace (Fla.) High, Sproat is committed to Florida. Hendrie, a catcher from Antelope Valley (Calif.) JC, would play at San Diego State next spring.

The deadline is this Friday. I figured if the Cubs didn't sign Hendrie by this point he's not signing. Maybe something came up in his physical? Maybe he thinks he can improve his draft stock and get drafted higher in the coming years?

Yeah, it doesn't seem likely at this point. I just got a bit nervous when I was crunching the numbers as to the available bonus pool space, but I was mathing all wrong. I thought the Cubs needed Hendrie to sign just slightly underslot to fit everything in, but I redid the figures and it looks like they have $17K or so available from the 5% overage.

News, eh?

I'm guessing Mack Chambers is signing.

Weird to call that news at this point, since he supposedly agreed to terms weeks ago.

Yeah, but it isn't "official." The agreeing to terms weeks ago is how Callis knows it's going to be official today.

Just my guess.

It also helps if I remember that Chambers agreeing to go pro weeks ago probably IS news to most people.

What we all expected... Not a huge loss and maybe the wires got crossed between what the agent/player wanted and what the Cubs thought he would sign for.

I remember this well. Not fun times.

Wasn't a fan of the draft to begin with so wasting the 10th round pick makes it even more frustrating, hope they at least get Chambers signed.

The Reds got the 170th rated guy in the 12th round a SS from PR for 249K or 124 towards the pool. That would been our 4th ranked guy if we could have just signed a cheap SR signing in that 10th round and still had money left to give to Chambers if he doesn't get signed.

Have to wonder if both of them changed their asking prices after the draft or just Hendrie that threw the wrench in the works.

This is (I believe) the first time under Theo that the Cubs haven't signed all their draft picks inside the top 10 rounds. Also, the first unsigned 11th rounder as well. It probably was linked the more I think about it (going underslot on Hendrie to sign Chambers to a slight overslot deal).

The Cubs didn't sign RHP Trey Cobb in like the 12th or 13th round back in the 2016 draft I think. He was an okay pitcher (not a big time prospect) and went back to school.

Man, I forgot how weak this past draft class was on the positional side. Sigh.

Thanks for sharing the full draft report card. I was surprised they gave best secondary pitch to Chris Clarke and called his CB "a potential 70-grade pitch". That's high praise. I went back and watched some video of Chris Clarke. I saw nothing I would rate as 'plus-plus' or anywhere close to that, but I saw a few good benders in this one:
