I was driving and listening on the Caritini ground rule double thing. First how is that possible? And second can’t the umpire have discretion and have ruled/given Willy home plate. It doesn’t always need to be just 2 bases, right?

It literally bounced over the wall. If the ball has enough arc to it, it can easily happen. I think it was around 2010 when Castro had it happen to him in the 9th inning of a game against Cincinnati or St. Louis and then Fukudome singled on the very next pitch to end the game.

I believe only when there is interference of some sort, but even then I’ve never seen them actually do anything but 2 bases for anybody. I’d imagine the opposing manager would come unglued if somebody made that decision.
