Not great opener for little: 0.2-2-4-4-2-1.

Pulled him mid-inning at 35 pitches and still only retired two guys.

He apparently struck out a guy for the 3rd out but the ball got away from the catcher and then it all went to horsefeathers

That's an understatement. What a damn abortion of a first full season start. It's cold still, but the velo still isn't up to what the pre-draft scouting reports had him at.

What kind of velocity did you see?

Estrada and Marquez getting good reviews down in Arizona: https://www.thecubreporter.com/04102018/cubs-win-home-opener#more

CUBS LINEUP:

4a. Jonathan Sierra, RF: 0-3 (3-2 FC, K, F-7)

5a. Chrisopher Morel, 3B: 1-2 (5-U FC, 1B, RBI, CS)

5b. Henderson Perez, PH-C-DH: 0-2 (K, F-8)

9. Luis Vazquez, SS: 0-2 (HBP, F-7, K)

CUBS PITCHERS:

4. Jeremiah Estrada: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 1/3 GO/AO, 27 pitches (15 strikes)

5. Brailyn Marquez: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/2 GO/AO, 23 pitches (17 strikes)

BRADSBEARD: Not counting guys who are at Extended Spring Training to get into shape for full-season ball, Jeremiah Estrada and Brailyn Marquez are the top two pitching prospects at Cubs EXST right now. Actually that's why they pitched today (Tuesday) after Kyle Ryan and the two rehab guys (McNeil and Rondon), because they are at the head of the class.

Estrada's FB has been sitting at 94 the last two outings, and in his previous outing (which was an intrasquad game) he had a plus-plus knee-buckling CV. But against the Dodgers he was bouncing/spiking his CV in front of the plate and so he used his FB to get outs. He is still a bit raw.

Marquez is more-polished than Estrada. His FB is ranging 90-92 T-93, and his CV is more consistent than Estrada's at this point. Marquez also features a CH that shows promise.

As things stand right now, Estrada and Marquez (in no particular order) are likely to be the #1 and #2 starters at Eugene when the short-season leagues begin play in June. They are both legit SP prospects, and (presuming there are no blips) both will be will spending the next couple of months getting game experience as starting pitchers and gradually increasing their innings and pitch counts.

89-92 was what I was told.

Thanks rubes. Yeah, for a guy whose scouting reports and 1st-round status assumed a plus fastball, that's nothing to get excited about.

Hopefully we'll see better in future. But you'd almost think with the adrenaline of opening day, you might expect extra fast if anything... O well, better luck next time, I guess.
