Yeah, one of those bad seasons got the Red Sox the #7 pick and they selected Andrew Benintendi (the Cubs wanted him badly and were two picks behind them).

The other bad season and another #7 pick led to them selecting LHP Trey Ball, who is not a pitcher or really a prospect anymore.

So much luck is involved in the draft and teams messing up selections and allowing other teams to capitalize with their picks. We don't get KB in the 2013 draft if the Astros aren't stupid when they decided to take Mark Appel #1.

Very few teams win the World Series with the best record in baseball lately. - Jon Smoltz 10 seconds after referencing the 2016 Cubs

To be fair the Cubs and Red Sox are only time this decade.

A lil pissed Red Sox won because before this year Cubs were arguably the best World Series Champion since the 114 win Yankees in the late 90s.

Crazy the Sox have won 4 World Series in the last 14 seasons and all 4 of them featured somewhat difference cores. Look at the top 5 fWAR players from each team

2004:

Schilling (6.5)

Pedro (4.8)

Damon (4.3)

Ortiz (4.2)

Varitek (4.1)

2007:

Ortiz (6.3)

Beckett (5.7)

Lowell (4.5)

Crisp (4.4)

Youkilis (4.1)

2013:

Pedroia (4.8)

Victorino (4.7)

Ellsbury (4.6)

Drew (3.6)

Saltalamacchia (3.5) (Ortiz was 6th, tied with Lester at 3.4)

2018:

Betts (10.4)

Sale (6.5)

Martinez (5.9)

Bogaerts (4.9)

Benintendi (4.3)

Of course with 3-5 years between each title, the roster is going to naturally change but the Sox have been able use their massive resources to shuffle the deck around instead of having a "core" and building around it. Probably not done deliberately considering they've had 3-4 GMs during the run, but impressive nonetheless

Cores have always been a little bit of a fake concept.

Who is the biggest baseball nihilist, David or Kyle?

I don't even mean in the "players are all going to fall apart and die when they turn 25" sense, although that's true too.

It's just silly to constantly try to slap some meaningless sticker on an arbitrary subset of your roster.

Of course, I'm still just bitter that we traded Darwin Barney after naming him to the core. I thought it was safe to let him into my heart just a little.

A lil pissed Red Sox one because before this year Cubs were arguably the best World Series Champion since the 114 win Yankees in the late 90s.

Red Sox had the best record in 2013.

And I know you said this decade but there's also the 2009 Yankees and the 2007 Red Sox. So that's 5 times out of the last 12 World Series that the best record in the majors won the title. Before 2007 you'd have to go back to the 1998 Yankees for the next one.

So like usual, Smoltz has no idea what he's talking about.

Other teams have won with best record but the Cubs I think were tied for most wins for a WS champ since those 90s Yanks.

Red Sox tied with Cards for most wins in 2013. 09 Yanks were the last to win it all and be the sole leader in wins iirc.
