Boras client that didn’t take it to FA. Wonder if that’s Boras switching up strategies.

Maybe a bit, but it's not like this is unprecedented. Strasburg took the extension rather than FA, as well. For the right amount, Boras clients will extend, and it's not like the Astros got a discount rate. Boras has made some miscalculations, but overall he's pretty shrewd. There's little chance that at ~30 Altve would get a bigger contract.

Bryce is going $400MM if 28 y/o Altuve gets 30/yr

bryce was always getting $400M IMO

also really it's 30 year old altuve getting $30M/yr

I'm glad they got an extension done for Altuve. He deserves it. No one is mentioning it right now, but if Bryce is getting $400 million or close to that then how much is Correa getting?

I hope Houston can afford him when he becomes a FA in a few years.

Correa will hit free agency a year older, and quite frankly, he doesn't have the ceiling that Harper does. It's much more likely that by free agency that Correa is basically a poor-man's Josh Donaldson. Plenty good, but not a an MVP caliber talent.

I don't know about that. I guess I could see Correa slowing down and/or losing range as he gets older. If that happens he should move over to 3B.

I'm very high on Correa. He would have put up a monster year in terms of WAR if he didn't miss so much time last season. I think his ceiling is actually higher than Harper, but the chances of reaching it are low. If he can stay at SS and actually reaches those ARod comps he is the most valuable player in MLB. I'm not exactly sure how good he is defensively, but I think he has a fair chance of staying at SS.

Higher ceiling than Harper? Better than Trout if he hits his ceiling? Nah, sorry.

Again, the ceiling for a player is their highest possible projection. The chances are low that he ever reaches that point like I said. I could see Correa being the best player in MLB in a few years. That's not a crazy idea. He's already one of the best players in MLB.

I mean if we’re talking ceilings Trout and Harper peak ceiling year is putting up an late 90s-04 Bonds type year with above average (Harper) or gold glove defense in CF (for Trout’s case).

I also don’t think people are crazy about Correa’s defense and a move to 3B/OF/2B/1B wouldn’t be out of the question in a few years for a guy his size (6’4”- 6’-5” is pretty huge for a SS) as he fills out. I’m also pretty sure there’s a decent contingent of scouts who feel Bregman is already the best SS on the team (iirc from reading prospect ranking stuff on him).

Also as a side note holy lord is Bonds fangraphs page ridiculous, I stumble on it a few times a year and always am in amazement.

I agree with you guys that Trout will probably still be the best player in baseball in a few years, but if there is a candidate to overtake him it's Correa. I agree with everything you wrote except Trout or Harper reaching another level and putting up Bonds-like numbers at some point in their careers. I feel like this is as good as it gets for those two (damn good). I think they've reached their potential ceilings. They could still get better, but I doubt that will happen.

I feel like Correa has more variance and has a chance to improve and become way better. Honestly, I just was trying to compare Correa against Harper, and said if Harper is getting $400 million then how much is Correa getting. Correa put up 6.3 WAR in only 109 games last year at the age of 22.

Kris Bryant is also better than Correa. Bryce Harper posted a 9.5 WAR at 22, Correa’s ceiling isn’t higher than his. You’re wrong man.
