I don't get why they just don't blow it up

If you read the piece you'll see why. That title really doesn't mesh with the article

I read it and just don’t agree. I think they’d get solid prospects for all their logical guys to trade. I think he undersells some of the value of them along with money owed/needed to be paid. They’d get a Sale type trade for Bumgarner, they’d get top 25-50 MLB prospects for all of Crawford, Belt, Samardzija and Cueto and wouldn’t have to pay much of the salaries outside of Cueto. Posey would bring back a good haul too but I could see keeping him as franchise icon. Trading those guys + the bottoming out due to having a bad roster and adding high picks for a few years and doing Feldman/Hammel type 1 year and flip deals would have them with a top system very fast.

did you see what the marlins got for Stanton? teams aren’t paying top prospects for names when those names have fair (or overpriced) contracts attached.

None of their guys, outside of maybe Cueto, have a Stanton level commitment/downside. They could get very a good prospect(s) for all of them, especially if some of the contracts are paid for. Arroyo was the 65th overall prospect in MLB by Law and 55th by Sickels, last year and he just got traded for Longoria who has a worst contract than any of them and value wise is no better. They can easily get prospects inside the top 50 for their guys given their contracts aren't as bad.

The Giants were in kind of a no win spot. Like Grant said, aside from Bumgarner all their guys are the types where you could get prospects or salary relief, but not both.

That means they're not in a position to do what the White Sox did.

The team is also not that far away from being good. Their outfield is a travesty, and they're light on depth, but they've generally got the frontline talent to compete. Theyre something like Lorenzo Cain and lucking into finding this year's Logan Morrison away from being a legit playoff team. It's not an enviable position, but close enough to warrant taking a shot.

a team that projections (inherently conservative) think is bad enough to project them at 75 wins is really horsefeathering bad. and they have a behemoth and another very good team in their division. they're going to be 100 win fodder for the dodgers like the reds and cardinals are for us.

So you eat much of the sunk costs of the contracts and get the best players you can.
