I was kicking around the question as to whether Soler as a DH would put up more WAR than Baez with his defense, since he (Soler, duh) won't have a chance to hurt you in the field...but I'm not sure how much KC will use Soler at DH vs. RF, so I'm posing it this way. There's also the question as to how much he'll see the field (er, batters box, at least).

As for Javy's side, he posted some insane defensive numbers this year...I'm not saying he can't do it again but doing it that well seems like a big ask. Not sure it's sustainable. And he's likely to be less protected offensively with an increased role (in terms of matchups), and subsequently, there's a good chance he'll start to hurt us more offensively.

BTW, here's hoping Javy busts out in a big way next year and gets this thread bumped for all the right reasons sometime at midseason, assuming we don't trade him in a package for Archer or Quintana or something.

Also: the poll options should be yes or no.

The thread title poses it differently, yes, but the poll's title asks it the way the options are presented

the poll's title doesn't really ask anything

Mark Trumbo hit 47 bombs last year and finished with 2.2 WAR. Baez had just 450 PA, walked 3 percent of the time (lol) and finished with 2.7. I'm gonna go with Javy

Yeah, Soler for a while has been the kind of guy who has to hit like a maniac to just offset how much he sucks at everything else besides being so damn handsome. Baez at least brings more than one thing to the table.

Yeah, but Trumbo's defense brought that down a lot. We're not counting that. Soler will probably walk more, too.

And I don't think Javy can pull off what he did again. That was a freakish and probably flukish defensive contribution.

My basic idea here is that Javy had a lot go right (both purposely and accidentally) to get to his WAR total and will be exposed as his role is expanded.

I have no idea if what he did defensively is repeatable but I definitely doubt it.

(FWIW, I voted Javy, but I think it's a lot closer than this poll result suggests)

Searching for guys who were net zeroes on defense last year, I came up with Mike Trout (lol), Johnathan Schoop, and Gregory Polanco

Polanco is interesting because his numbers look like what you could hope for from a healthy Soler (.258/.323/.463) and he was worth 2.5 WAR

I'm surprised Polanco was a net zero on defense. Damn. But there you go.
