Nobody is saying he's not going to get a lunatic contract; this whole tangent started out of the usual, "let's horsefeathers on the hypothetical idea of Team X signing Player Y as being impossible, even if they inexplicably outbid everyone else, because we think their highly ranked farm system is actually butt."

Yeah, that definitely didn't come out of nowhere. It was discussed for a while.

i mean from the media, particularly the local media, and mostly prior to the winter meetings. it picked up steam right around this time that year.

Yeah I think i'm just remembering my surprise that he actually signed with the Cubs, because that thread you posted about the Cubs looking into himfor CF seems familiar.

The long and short of it is that all of our beat writers except Sharma are morons, and Sharma's not a big time inside sources guy. If Passan/Rosenthal say something, give it some weight, otherwise it's either nonsense or coming from someone who puts out enough nonsense that you can't really say what's actually real.

Yeah I mentioned that basically the other day. With Rosenthal’s stuff the last ~24 hours, Levine admitting on the radio today they are clueless and now Kap’s tweet. It doesn’t seem like anyone knows what the hell is going on and at the least we probably can take comfort in those “Cubs have no money” articles early on are probably baseless and them just making dumb guesses.

i'm just saying they would have to outbid the field by a large margin to win out against what the field of suitors is likely to be. then, yeah, of course they could sign him. but so could any shitty organization.

offering like a few million more AAV isn't gonna do it.

What was Rosenthal saying again?

Nothing really, it amounts to he thinks the Cubs are going to do something. I posted it in the main Cubs transaction thread

Here's Ken Rosenthal skyping Smoltz from his bedroom to tell you that he thinks the Cubs will respond to the Goldschmidt move, it may be small it may be large, it may be one move it may be a couple... they also would have done this without the Goldschmidt move.

He tweeted something like “Theo watch is on” in response to Mooney’s article the other day asking are the Cubs “laying in the weeds” on Harper and then he was on MLBN last night saying he expects the Cubs to make moves and it could be big. That clip is like a page or two back I think.

Right, which is why it's nonsense at this point to act like any of us know which of the few teams willing to spend on him actually are, and how much they would be willing to outspend each other. As you said yourself, this is a once in a generation-type signing opportunity, so to act like it's nigh impossible that at least one unexpected team would swoop in and clobber everyone else is, IMO, a bit of wishful thinking.

This is not saying that that team is likely to be the White Sox....but the White Sox could be that type of team! It's both things! While the total pool of teams willing to actually spend what it takes is small, that tiny pool might have some unexpected fish oozing their way in because this is such an exceptional FA signing.

That's really going out on a limb "saying he expects the Cubs to make moves and it could be big". Does any really think the Cubs aren't going to make any moves this offseason? "It could be big" or maybe not.

Baseball players are dumb meatballs and nobody knows what motivates them besides money. When they pick for reasons that aren't obviously money, they pick for reasons that no dumdums on a message board could have predicted.

Obviously doesnt mean they are out on Harper. In fact he might be alluding to the Cubs potentially trying to make it work, but it definitely confirms that we are under a tightish budget.

Edit: More

i don't think it definitely confirms anything other than that is the message being sent publicly, which we pretty much already knew.

that said, i do think they want to move some salary to allow for flexibility with a harper signing. whether they would ultimately do it regardless of being able to move guys, i'm not sure.

Darvish looks a lot dumber if it really did take us out of Harper range.

I thought I read that this budget shutting closed wasn’t anticipated and it had something to do with the Wrigley renovations

There’s no way they added Darvish if they thought he could affect Bryce at the time of signing him. Either these are complete lies about our spending abilities or something drastic happened to shut it off.

The bad news: the extravagant idea to open up an HR Giger bar in Wrigley cost WAY more than expected.

The good news: now we have the perfect place to drink away away our unfathomable sadness as the Cubs get bounced from the WC game next year.
