The new favorite to acquire Harper, in my opinion, is the Chicago Cubs.

That guess isn’t sourced – it’s merely speculation. But I’m not the only person to think it. Not by a long shot.

EDIT:

Jason Heyward has a player option after the 2018 season. If he chooses to go to free agency, it would not only clear off five years and $106 million on the payroll, it would open up a spot for Harper in the outfield.

Could've left this one out of the discussion there, guy.

While those teams figure to show strong interest in signing Harper, the Cubs still seem to be the favorite – at least on paper. Here’s why:

Yeah, the odds of the Cubs signing Harper are a whole lot better than the odds of Heyward opting for FA.

But the odds of the Cubs trading Heyward (while still not very good) are whole lot better than Jason opting for FA.

Maybe the dude at fanrag was unaware of the fact that Heyward can be traded (while blocking 12 teams) after the 2018 season with that window closing prior to the 2020 season, but it's the far more compelling possibility to raise in his article.

In my estimation, Theo and Jed had that window (tradeable after 2018 to the beginning of 2020) included in Heyward's contract for two specific possibilities. 1) Harper becoming a FA after 2018 and 2) the likely development timeline of Eloy Jimenez.

Someone please explain to me why J-hay would option out?

There may be a big market for RFs who play great defense and hit like 160 lb. middle infielders.

Chili fixes Heyward THIS SEASON. Book it.

Assuming current production going forward?

Because he won't be a starter in 2019? He'd be better off letting the FO know he'll waive his no trade, though.

A little disappointed. I was expecting at least one “user name checks out”

He wouldn't. (Or at least he shouldn't) But more importantly, he doesn't have to in order to be moved.

Well, after this season he doesn't have a full no trade clause until his 10-5 rights kick in in 2020. It would still help if he waived his 12-team no trade list, though.

I was just thinking that if we sign Darvish and need to shed some money to go after Harper (aka avoid having a $245 million payroll), Chatwood could be a decent trade candidate next offseason. I think they pretty clearly weren't expecting to sign Darvish when they got Chatwood, and I'll be surprised if Chatwood doesn't put up a good ERA this season out of Coors and in front of this defense. We'd also have Smyly, Montgomery, and Alzolay for the 5th spot barring injuries and/or trades.

There is no reason to do it, but I'd almost punt this season if it meant getting Harper next year. Who needs a TOR pitcher anyway?

No. We can do both.

If I was a betting man, I'd take Chicago vs. the field next year. I'm weirdly sure that Harper will come to the Cubs and that it won't be an agonizing decision

Agreed, since the second they lost Ohtani actually.
