i'd be curious to know how often a team's been in the AP top 12 and also missed a bowl game, because it looks like at least 3 teams are facing that possibility

By my count, 4, and all are either ND or teams on their schedule.

 

The fact this might well be the single most marshmallow-soft schedule the Irish have ever played (USC might literally be the best team they play this year and they're going to go, what, 7-5?) makes the fact that they probably won't make a bowl even more infuriating.
