PFF has Bullard as the best pick of the draft and Whitehair as 4th best.

1. Jonathan Bullard, DE, Chicago Bears

To find a defensive lineman with Bullard’s upside in the third round is ridiculous value. However, Bullard isn’t even a high-risk, high-reward type player. His run-stopping ability will most certainly translate to the NFL after he led all of college with a +51.5 run defense grade a year ago. It’s a question of whether his athleticism will ever begin to translate as a pass rusher after he posted the 68th-best pass rushing grade in the FBS last year.

4. Cody Whitehair, OG, Chicago Bears

Whitehair is another college tackle that will almost certainly slide inside because of length concerns. He was the cleanest college tackle in the nation a year ago, leading all of the FBS in grading. His positioning and technique are already at the level of a seasoned NFL veteran and if he can put a bit more strength on his frame, Whitehair has the potential to be a top-5 interior lineman.

Looking at the 2016 Bears as currently looking, what position groups would you identify as the 3 biggest strengths and 3 biggest weaknesses?

Strengths:

OG

ILB

OLB

HM: WR?

Weaknesses:

TE

CB

OT

HM: RB? S?

it's funny that the analysis on bullard is the exact opposite of what greg gabriel thinks of him...says the pass rush will be there and that the run stopping is a question.

You qualify OG and OT as separate position groups? I don't think I've ever seen that, just OL. I'd say the LB group has to be the biggest strength. I can't really think of 2 other groups I would qualify as a strength. OL should be okay, but they are weak at tackle. WR may turn into a strength but I wouldn't qualify it so right now. Not with two brittle guys accounting for the entire group. I don't think TE matters enough to be considered a true weakness. They aren't great there but that position isn't going to lose them games. The RBs and DBs may be weak, but could be okay. This team is filled with "won't embarrass you" types.

Good response. I grouped OG and OT separately because I just read an article that grouped them separate so it was stuck in my head, and like you said tackle is a weakness while I really like the guards.

Also I might have missed the discussion in this thread but apparently the Bears were one of three teams that tried to trade up with the Browns for Connor Cook. The other 2 teams were the Raiders (who got him for their 4th and a 5th) and Cowboys. Once the Bears didn't get him, they decided to punt on QB in the draft and sign Hoyer.

I see a lot of people lamenting the Bears lack of a developmental QB and while that is par for the course in the never ending concern about Cutler, it's not really a big deal. Jay is 33, he's signed longterm and his cap hit is fairly low the next three years. 17/16/17

If you are desperate to replace him, you needed a QB this year. If you aren't desperate to replace him, you didn't need one. A Connor Cook in the 4th may have made sense but it was probably a better idea to use your 4th round and better picks on guys that can help the team this year.

Yea, until you're ready to sink a high pick into a QB, it doesn't make a ton of sense to get a developmental guy.

On Nov. 20, on the last play of a Friday practice, Rolle slipped and tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and missed the final four games. His 2015 totals: Seven games played, 35 tackles.

“The surfaces in the Chicago facilities are the worst I’ve ever been around, I’m just gonna be honest with you,’’ Rolle said. “I slipped on the surface, I wasn’t even running, I was just kind of shuffling and slipped.’’

I'm not familiar with talk of the practice facilities having terrible surfaces. It wouldn't surprise me, but I also think this may be an old man hoping for teams to look past his age and injury and give him one last contract.

their playing surface is garbage, why would their practice field be significantly better?

from a fast track / slow track standpoint it is garbage. But it hasn't been particularly dangerous to the health of players.

because the two things aren't at all related?

Manny Ramirez, Zach Miller, Hoyer, Willie Young and Freeman are all over 30 but the last 3 are exactly 30.

Freeman, Hoyer, Miller, Ramirez, and Young are all 30+. Porter is still 29 until August.

The only players left from Trestman/Emery (AKA played more than 1 season w/ the Bears):

Cutler

Gould

Fuller

Christian Jones

Wilson

Bellamy

O'Donnell

Jeffery

Carey

McManis

Hurst

Perry

Leno

Long

Mariani

Sutton

Washington

Ferguson

Young

Houston

The highlighted guys will likely all be on the roster bubble in camp, with 1 of the last 2 being rumored as trade bait. Pace will have overturned 17 of the 22 starters (counting Young/Houston as 1 as both started 8 games in '14 and only 1 will "start" this year) in just 1 seasons worth of games by opening day this year.

I'd put Ferguson in yellow too. Maybe even Wilson.
