The White situation doesn't even factor in, IMO. Smiths injury could easily enough to remove him completely from your board. Still a bit of time until the draft and positive medicals could change that, but even in round two or three he may not be worth the risk.

I don't necessarily think that last year's 1st round pick should play into this year's decision. The goal is to make your team better in the long term and if he's the best player out there, and the concerns that his injury will take away from his talent are minimal, i'm fine with drafting him.

I don't disagree with that premise entirely. But prior situation shapes into the decision prominently as another medical risk increases the likelihood of destroying 1st round impact player value in consecutive years. As this team is not presently a winning perennial playoff contender nor loaded with talent, only if such a wide talent gap exists between players can that gamble be made worth it. Early in the draft, this does not seem to be the case. This franchise is already thoroughly hamstrung from disappointing draft selections and the margin or error has grown too small.

I'm confident that Emery won't even approach that risk without a significant set of circumstances playing out perfectly, and even then...

last year's first round pick absolutely plays into this year's pick. Unless it's a lineman you aren't going to draft the same position two years in a row, since you need 7/8 on each side anyway. If last year's pick contributed nothing to the team because of injury you cannot risk this year's pick on an already injured player who will probably not contribute anything next year. You can feel free to talk about disassociating the picks and making every pick in a vacuum without consideration for circumstance, but no sane GM is going to actually act that way in real life. Pace needs to improve this team in a hurry. The coach is old as hell and the QB situation may only be stable for a year or two. They need a lot of talent now and their draft slot allows them to get a lot of talent now. If they draft a LB who does nothing in 2016 chances are the team is going to be mediocre again, and that is not going to be good for Pace's future.

I'm not confident with any Emery decision.

Hopefully the Bears aren't letting a scout for the Falcons make draft decisions for them.

Let's put it this way- the Smith situation is serious. If we had a fully healthy round one pick last year, Smiths situation would be just as serious.

Trevathan is PFF's 7th rated unrestrcited FA.

Makes sense. We'll probably pay more than we think we should on Trevethan and a Bennett replacement. For as much money as we have, the FA market is gonna be a little nutty with lots of money and many top targets tagged.

Trevathan would be an awesome pickup, I hope that comes true. The secondary DL market rumors haven't made any mention of Ian Williams recently that I'm aware of. I'm sticking with my prediction of the Bears signing him since they're moving Goldman to one of the 5's.

I'll be way more bothered by the over the top reaction to that than I will be by that happening, which would be a fairly mild bummer for me.

Especially the people that will be angry with Matt for going there like he is going to eliminate one of the maybe 6-7 teams that are possibilities for fit and $ because they are rivals of the team that declined to offer him a contract.
