Best surprise? Hendricks or Coghlan? Or is it Jake or KB for being THAT [expletive] good?

Best surprise? Arrieta, by far. No one saw Arrieta turning into this freak Cy Young, Bob Gibson, Zach Greinke mish-mash of godly pitchers.

I was expecting Bryant to be good, but I was mostly just expecting him to slug and walk his way to 3.5-4 wins. But nope, he's pretty damn good in all facets and is essentially Trout-light (KB actually had more value on the bases and in the field than Trout this year)

A lot of good stuff on that list.

I saw this as the tip-top end of what Bryant might do. It never occurred to me that Arrieta might have a whole other gear.

Same here.

I still maintain that Coghlan's fWAR is the best argument right now that defensive metrics are still basically some unholy combination of alchemy and voodoo and not to be trusted.

I fully expected Soler to be in that 4 range. Damn you, Georgie!

Soler's horrid defense takes away whatever offense he brings in the WAR department

I would have easily taken Soler at 4.8 over the combo of Schwarber/Russell, if I were asked. Worked out fine though.

If you were to show me the fWar of Cubs players at two months ago and then showed me those numbers at the end of the season, I think Starlin's .8 would be top of my list of surprises. Absolutely remarkable end of the year for him. And completely unexpected.

I just want to point out that I predicted that Arrieta would finish second in the Cy Young (and that Fowler would lead the NL in runs scored...he finished 3rd behind Pollock and Goldschmidt) in the "Bold Prediction" thread. Looks like I could possibly, maybe hit it on the nose, even if I didn't call having the best post-break era in baseball history.
