I recently found out that if you do paypal from a checking account, it can take a few days to clear.

That could be it.

Out of curiosity, how much does it cost to run this site per year?

The primary cost is the server. I sized the server back in the day when there was more traffic and in order to handle surges as I'm anticipating tonight. It was way oversized for the past few years, but I'm hoping that the capacity will be needed as we move forward. It is $250/month for that cost.

So assuming the donation bar is in dollars, is that plus advertising enough to cover the full cost, or are you still paying out of pocket? Considering how much this site occupies my time at work, I would gladly consider donating more if its needed.

If I could average about $100 in donations I'd break even. Next month I'll be resetting the target there. I really appreciate everyone's support!

Just made a donation. I don't use adblock, but have been on this site since 2003. Don't post as much as I'd nearly like, but am always browsing and reading as this is the most enjoyable and analytical board that I know. It has always been, and will continue to be, my primary stop for all things Cubs. So for that I thank you Tim, and am happy to donate. =D>

btw, tim, how has traffic been this year relative to the last few (and the good years before that)?

April 1 - Sept 30 (In pageviews):

2015: 4,642,176

2014: 4,880,690

2013: 4,717,368

2012: 5,458,785

2011: 4,033,182

2010: 5,523,874

2009: 8,592,523

2008: 11,162,870

2007: 12,132,332

2006: didn't have google analytics yet

Fundamentally, a lot of people left during the bad years that haven't come back. There are just so many more options out there these days. Facebook and Twitter have sucked so much of the traffic from sites like mine in recent years.

Could there be another reason you're not considering? Maybe there are posters that don't like the constant bickering or the way that threads have a tendency to break down into pissing matches.

Sure, that, too.

Can you point me to a site where they don't?

I blame gifs. We're really alienating the sweet dial-up market share.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I merely pose another possibility. You mentioned Twitter and Facebook as sites that are stealing your posters/page views. Those sites certainly have the same amounts of trolling.

It's because it's much easier and quicker to read and post in discussions about anything via newer social media platforms instead of a dorky old message board. Those of us that are left here are just sad and waiting to die.

Twitter is awful for discussion. It's a mess to read. It's amazing as a place for consolidating a bunch of news sources and stuff like that, and getting links to articles, but when people try to argue or have discussions on there it's just a cluster [expletive] of unreadable Tweets one after another. After that you have, what? Facebook and Instagram comments? That's like a half step above news article/blog comments as the darkest underbelliest dumbest parts of the internet.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I don't really see any newer social media platforms that are better at doing what we do than this one.
