If the Cardinals and Pirates would have gone even just .500 during our stretch, we would have gained 7 or 8 games.

Nothing is ever easy for the Cubs. At the very least, we need to grab the first wild card spot.

why would you expect them to go .500? they are both really good teams.

the ground that they gained on the giants is way more important than the ground they didn't make up on the cards/pirates.

Well...went 14-1 and gained just 4 games each on Cardinals and pirates.

That shouldn't be surprising. The Pirates were (and still are) playing at just under a .600 pace. Over 15 games, they'd be expected to win 9. So we only picked up one less game than expected. The Cardinals would be expected to win 9.6 games on their current pace so we basically picked up as many as to be expected.

And this stretch made winning the division a possibility. If the Cubs even go 12-3, which would still be great, they'd be 9.5 back of St. Louis and only 2.5 up on the Giants. This was a great run and we made up a ton of ground. Sure, it could have been better, but it could have been a hell of a lot worse as well.

It's wishful thinking, as it isn't unheard of for even excellent teams to play average ball over a couple weeks. It's not like we're asking the Cardinals to pull a reverse Cubs, as glorious as that would be.

...and 5-1 Giants. Absolutely 0 help today. What a frustrating situation. I know if we keep winning everything will take care of itself but it would be really great if our best season since 2003 doesn't come down to needing to win a game at PNC park.

I share your frustration and love this team too, but this year has a ways to go before it becomes the best season since 2003.

If the Cubs play .500 ball the rest of the year, the Nationals would have to go 32-16 to tie the Cubs. And the Mets would have to go on a slightly lesser hot streak to stay ahead of the Cubs and Nationals

You convinced me. Keep hitting bombs Harper.

And that can still happen in the ensuing weeks. You are focusing entirely too much on what happened in these last two weeks alone. There is a reason we had to make up ground, in the first place.

[expletive], we are in the midst of winning 14 of 15 and some people are harping on games other teams didn't lose.

This year is awesome and I'm enjoying the [expletive] out of it...but did he just forget 2008 happened?
