This was one I wasn't familiar with either, which is why I dug into it a little.

1) The rule book includes several "approved ruling" examples for 4.09(b) which include various batted ball scenarios. So they're countenanced by the "..or any other play.." clause as well.

2) But don't take my word for it:

Crew chief Larry Vanover calmly cited Rule 4.09(b) and explained variations of it to Price, who said he was not contesting the runners going to home or first.

"They were asking, 'Can we throw it around and tag all the bases and get forceouts?' In that situation, you can't," Vanover explained afterward to a pool reporter. "First of all, they didn't play the ball. The infielders were leaving the infield. The runner from third touched the plate and the runner from the plate touched first. Those two things right there met the obligation of the rule. When that run scores and the batter has touched first, the game's over."

I get he says that now, but had they gone 3rd to 2nd the Reds would have won the protest IMO. It's just so unusual. Another thing that makes baseball great.

Why do people believe that obscure rulings make baseball great? Has Tim Kurkjian convinced everybody of stuff like this or did you come to that feeling on your own?

Back before cell phones, I had a bathroom reader with weird baseball scenarios where you were supposed to figure out the right ruling. It occupied that time well.

That was the only use I had for obscure rulings.

I remember buying a few Choose Your Own Adventure-style books as a kid where you were managing a baseball team. They ended up being mostly this kind of crazy/obscure stuff, and usually it resulted in me hurling the book across the room.
