Don Mattingly is truly the worst

I guess it is only a manager, but it's pretty funny that Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi of all people, are the ones who employ Don Mattingly.

The Dodgers have a 275 million dollar payroll and they still had to make two deadline moves to fill in their rotation(which is still Kershaw/Greinke/eh?) and their bullpen is some combination of not deep enough and managed by someone who should be kept away from sharp objects.

The Dodgers are 42-38 since May 10th.

I have a stupid question. If we played the Pirates in the WC game, and won, would we get STL? Or is there still that rule where you can't play a division opponent in the 1st round? Edited by DiamondMind

The third and fourth best teams in baseball will be forced to a one game playoff if this keeps up. Unbelievable.

under the old system, the fourth best team in baseball would miss the playoffs. improvement!

Yep, the cardinals would get the wild card winner because it is supposed to be an advantage that they would not have to face Arrieta/Cole game one by getting the Wild Card winner.

This is extremely premature obviously but Im guessing it would go Lester, Hammel, Arrieta. If we're down 2-1 we go back to Lester on 4 days rest, if we're up 2-1 you might roll the dice with Hendricks. Game 5 would be whoever didn't start between Lester/Hendricks with Arrieta available in relief if needed.

Pirates are a much better team at home so while the venue may not be a big deal to us, it is to them. I'd really like that home field.

Sure didn't help them last year in the WC game.

crazy ending in the Reds/DBacks game.

DBacks have bases loaded in the 10th with 1 out. Batter hits one deep for a walk off hit, but the runner on 1st never touches 2nd, and the runner on 2nd never touches 3rd (they both run to celebrate). The outfielder throws the ball in to the second baseman who tags 2nd.

Price is asking for a replay

So if they had just touched 3rd first and then thrown to 2nd the DP would have still counted and the game would have gone to the 11th, correct? But since they touched 2nd first then that made the play at 3rd a tag play so the run counted. Crazy crazy crazy.

No. Runners on 2nd and 3rd don't factor in the rule governing game-ending, walk-off scenarios with the bases loaded.

When the winning run is scored in the last half-inning of a regulation game, or in the last half of an extra inning, as the result of a base on balls, hit batter or any other play with the bases full which forces the runner on third to advance, the umpire shall not declare the game ended until the runner forced to advance from third has touched home base and the batter-runner has touched first base.

That said, personally, unless facing death or dismemberment for doing so, I'd prefer my guys always touch the next bag and then do whatever. Would be a heckuva time to misremember the rules.

This can't possibly be true. If the ball is hit to 3rd and he steps on the base and throws to 2nd for whatever reason, resulting in a double play, that rule says that as long as the runner on 3rd and the batter touch home and first, that double play doesn't matter. There has to be some exception for a force play being a factor.

This. I think the above rules doesn't take into account the bases being loaded bc it is such a strange play. Force outs will always be force outs no matter what.

Um, the rule clearly states, "with the bases full".

Yeah, I don't get the wording of the rule either.

That rule isn't talking about a ball in play. It's talking about a play that forces in a run from third; e.g., a BB or a HBP. So if a pitcher walks in a run, then the batter still needs to touch first and the runner on third needs to touch home. The rest doesn't matter, because there is no force play to be made.

Yep, upon re-reading it, there isn't any mention of a batted ball. I initially assumed that was included when it said the runners are forced to advance, but the rule quoted clearly has no bearing on this particular play.
