According to a report from Bruce Levine, the Cubs are interested in veteran outfielder Sam Fuld.

Sam Fuld was selected by the Cubs in the 10th round of the 2004 draft. Fuld broke in with the Cubs in September 2007 and was sent to Tampa Bay in January 2011 along with Chris Archer, Hak-Ju Lee, Robinson Chirinos and Brandon Guyer for Matt Garza, Fernando Perez and Zac Rosscup.

Sam Fuld played 268 games over three seasons in Tampa under manager Joe Maddon. Fuld was non-tendered in December 2013 and signed a minor league contract with the Oakland A’s in February 2014. After a brief stint in Minnesota, he was traded back to Oakland at the deadline last July.

Sam Fuld has really struggled at the plate this season. Fuld has hit .206/.285/.304 in 90 games with 12 doubles, three triples and a home run for a .588 OPS. Against right-handed pitching, Fuld has put together a .223/.294/.321 line this year.

I don't think I would mind it at all. If you're looking for a starter-type, Fuld isn't your guy. But he could be a great defensive replacement and pinch runner late in games and we really need it with Soler and Schwarber out there. Depends on the price though.

he's totally that random crappy guy who comes in in the playoffs and makes a crazy catch and gets a couple steals driving all the meatballs wild

Eh, he would be nice to have for defense late in the season and potentially in the playoffs. But I wouldn't move anyone on the current 25-man roster for him.

I don't think Fuld is a terrible fit for the roster if they go down to 7 relievers, but I'm not sure he brings anything that Szczur doesn't.

The Cubs have like 2 potential Rule 5 picks, and they'll both be rostered.

Contreras is eligible for the Rule 55, though I'm not sure exactly what that means. But it doesn't cost a big league roster spot, that much I know.

And right about now, I'd be reluctant to leave Candelario unprotected. Maybe Jonathan Martinez, Taylor Scott, and Michael Jensen, and Juan Paniagua. But you can't protect everyone. Other than that, there are a few guys who could be picked but probably not worth protecting; PJ Francescan, Taylor Davis, Steven Bruno, or Bijan Rademacher. I could also see someone taking Dillon Maples and stashing him on the 60 day much of the season.

I'd definitely roster Vogelbach and Johnson. Contreras too, if he needs it. Not worried about Candelario sticking with a team all season. Black or Paniagua could sneak thru a season on a roster, I guess. Not concerned if we lose those types though.
