Lock Bryant in long term right now?

If there was any chance of that happening, there would have been no need for all the "keep Bryant down for 2 weeks" drama at the start of the season.

That's not true.

You don't think that the Cubs would've tried to sign him to a longer term deal so that the "years of control" was a non-issue?

I think the year of control matters whether you negotiate a long term deal or not and I think waiting 2.5 weeks for it is a no brainer no matter what.

If you already had a long term deal into FA the control doesn't matter anymore- if you're looking at at before the fact.

Doesn't mean things couldn't change from either side from February to August though. However in this case I doubt anything will have changed from the Bryant side.

The control matters as a bargaining tool even if you negotiate an extension. It's additional leverage.

David is right - even if the Cubs felt like they could sign Bryant long-term at some point, it made sense to hold him down because that enables them to have to pay less money to buy out that year of control.

The only way holding down Bryant might not have made sense would've been if Boras/Bryant said, "We'll sign a long-term deal but only if Bryant is NOT held down those 2 weeks."

I think what Banedon was saying is that Boras/Bryant had, and continue to have, no interest in one of those arb/fa buyout deals and if they did, Theo would have made it happen and it would have likely been done before they season. Bryant would have been up and there would have been no need for the drama.

It could have been used as leverage without any of the drama.

They are more rare than perhaps with other agents, but haven't there been a few Boras clients that have signed those (i.e. Long-term/buy out arbitration years) types of contracts? I'm hoping the chemistry and all the youth - and having Rizzo and Castro both already on said contracts - will lean Bryant and Russell to take such deals. I'm sure that's me being overly optimistic, but that's my take.
