So how much might Schwarber's development at catcher be stunted if he stayed with the Cubs the rest of the year playing left field and then went back to catching next spring?

Why would you want to do that?

Have you seen him hit? I know it's a small sample size, but he's put up video game numbers in the time he's been here.

What's Montero's timetable to return? Let's say he's back by the end of the month, which sends Schwarber back to Iowa to catch for a month. Then he likely becomes a September call up and has to compete for playing time with Montero and Ross (ugh!).

So I really want to know; how much is not catching for the month of August going to stunt his growth? I'm not asking this in a sarcastic way. I don't know enough about developing catchers and Schwarber's place in that process to know if it's really a bad thing or not.

I meant why would you want to replace Coghlan (who is doing ok) with Schwarber when your options at catcher are Ross/Teagarden?

Yeah… missed the part about the duration of Montero's stay on the DL, which pretty much makes my point moot.

I misinterpreted your first post then, because, no, as long as Montero's on the DL, Schwarber should be the first option at catcher.

But I still am curious about the hypothetical situation I outlined, which was wondering how much of a setback Schwarber would suffer if he didn't catch on a regular basis for a month.

During the Joe Maddon show on the score today, Maddon said that Schwarber will be getting some starts in LF real soon. He said as soon as Davy is comfortable with him out there, he will get in the lineup when he doesnt catch

Can't be any worse than Coughlan out there (or Soler in RF)

UZR is in love with Coghlan this year, though he's right at 0 DRS and baseball reference has him with a negative dWAR. Would like to see some Schwarber LF/Coghaln RF when KS isn't catching.

why dont they just trade him to an AL team for a stud pitcher? I mean seriously he cant play defense anywhere he just sucks with the glove at all places on the field and is certainly nothing more than a DH or late inning pinch hitter in the NL. jeeze

He's still learning to be a proper catcher and all signs point to the Cubs thinking he's capable of being at least acceptable in the long term at the position, and if his bat is as good as it can be while playing acceptable defense at catcher he would be obscenely valuable.

Schwarber is at 0.9 fWAR in 22 games.

That's around a 6.5 full season pace.
