The Oakland Athletics have made the call for their bullpen, and they can go to either arm to bring in the major league's first ambidextrous pitcher since 1995.

The A's purchased the contract of Pat Venditte from Triple-A Nashville on Friday, according to MLB.com.

Venditte, who has a 2.37 ERA in 417 2/3 innings over eight minor league seasons, throws a fastball, slider and changeup from both sides and uses an ambidextrous glove with two thumb holes. He ranks fourth among Pacific Coast League pitchers, having allowed a .162 opponent batting average -- including just .092 against left-handed batters.

How often can he switch which arm he throws with? Middle of an AB as he pleases or do you have to throw with the same arm for an entirety of an AB?

He can switch every batter but not during an AB. He has to declare which arm before the AB starts.

Thanks, that makes sense

Random thought, can a batter go back and forth between each batter's box every pitch or is he locked in as a righty/lefty for his whole PA?

The batter has to declare for the entire PA, but technically the pitcher has to declare first.

I do not believe that is true unless it has changed recently.

Well the Venditte rule is that the pitcher has to declare first, but I could be wrong about the batter declaring for the entire PA. Is that what you're saying?

Correct. I do not believe there is anything preventing a batter from changing so long as the pitcher isn't set.

I also like the ",." at the end of the caption.
