it's such an idiotic jump that there is no point in explaining why

Well there was obvious hyperbole in there, but the point is that just because you can roll back the final outcome to some initial decision so far removed from the consequence that the person can't reasonably be held responsible for the cause-effect relationship (i.e., the decision to date him was a bad decision because it did eveeeeentually result in her death = silly conclusion) doesn't mean that rolling back the final outcome to the immediately preceding decision is some sort of useless exercise (i.e., the decision to get into the car with an obviously drunk driver = obviously bad decision). If anything, trying to equate these two in any meaningful way is the absurd jump in logic.

Whut. I have a feeling you completely missed my point, but I'll let you explain yourself.

Like I said, it's just a fruitless exercise; she made a whole host of decisions that night alone that resulted in her death. The main thing is just how annoying "I'm not *BLANK*, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut..." is. Right up there with, "hey, I'm just asking questions." Everyone with a functioning brain knows that getting in to the car with Taveras was ultimately a bad idea, so what was the point to begin with. This guy is clearly a stealth Cardinals fan.

We had a good thing going making fun of Oscar Taveras: Stupid Murderer. Let's not ruin that.

But nobody rolled back the final outcome to some initial decision so far removed from the consequence until you talked about the guy being born.

It wasn't just hyperbolic, it was incomparable and idiotic.

I thought it was pretty obviously a two point comment of, "wow, even though she wasn't the one driving drunk, she should have recognized that he was wildly drunk and not gotten in the car, what an exceptionally poor decision." Don't move the target. The main thing here was not your annoyance at my particular way of phrasing that, but rather your incorrect assertion that someone pointing that out equates to also blaming her for the accident. I don't have to distill my thinking down to diametric black & white: I can recognize her responsibility in not preventing her death without it at all taking away from his responsibility in causing it.

Ultimately it was a "poor decision" for her to date Taveras in the first place

It wasn't just hyperbolic, it was incomparable and idiotic.

I think I've pretty well shown that you're wrong there.

Both you and David seem to be under the mistaken assumption that that wasn't an example of how it's ultimately a spurious line of reasoning.

Like I said, hooray for redundancy. Still think you're actually a Cardinals fan.

Aren't there places where you can get in trouble for drunkenly getting into a car with a drunk driver too?

I seem to remember this happening with a football player a few years back.

The important thing is we got to make someone feel bad for introducing nuance to the conversation.

I am quoting this post.
