Sounding like he's definitely done:

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the "expectation" is that Adam Wainwright will miss the rest of the season with a left Achilles injury.

He's yet to undergo an MRI (that comes Monday), but the Cardinals don't appear to be optimistic about a diagnosis. It's obviously a massive blow for St. Louis, as Wainwright had allayed some concerns about his elbow with a strong start (1.44 ERA) to the season. The club does at least have some depth to fall back on with Marco Gonzales at Triple-A, although he's currently out with a shoulder/pectoral issue. Gonzales and Jaime Garcia (shoulder) are the likely long-term options to replace Waino in the rotation, but for now the club is likely to go with Tyler Lyons or Tim Cooney. They could also consider moving Carlos Villanueva from the bullpen to the rotation.

EDIT: Yea, I'd say he's done

Derrick Goold @dgoold

Lance Lynn and Michael Wacha don't have a bigger fan in baseball than Wainwright. He has said both can carry rotation. Here goes. #cardinals

He's the level of pitcher and the Cardinals are the team to carry the water to petition for an NL DH now with him getting hurt while batting last night

I can't imagine you'd hear the steeped in tradition and "the right way" Cardinals petitioning for the DH.

But yes, bring on the bats.

Last time he had a season ending injury, 2011 happened, so pardon me if I don't weep for these jackasses if he's done for the year again

Chris Carpenter also threw 237 IP for them that year.

It's time for the NL to add the DH. Not because of Wainwright, but because pitchers hit .122/.153/.152 last year. #boring

Maybe spend 10 minutes a day on hitting instead of changing the rules of the game. Just spitballing.

Why stop there? Start having catchers practice playing CF. Or hell, ban managers from being able to pinch hit for relievers. Mmmmm, yeah, that's some real terribly hitting goodness.

Thank God the DH is inevitable.

Hey, pitchers, stop working on the only thing that makes you valuable as a professional baseball player and spend time working on that thing you're always going to be terrible at that only weird old guys with pants up to their nipples (and weirdos who can't wait to be weird old guys with pants up to their nipples) love seeing you do.

Yeah, yeah, old guy in waiting over here. Why stop there? We should be able to DH for any crappy hitter in the lineup. After all, entertainment!

Pitchers make 5ish percent of all NL plate appearances. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the extra machinations in the late innings. If they want to associate the DH with only the starting pitcher I'd be okay with that, in fact making that stipulation across both leagues might be a nice compromise for the CBA conversations about it.

It's not that you're old, it's that your 10 minutes response was objectively stupid.

I think the DH is stupid. I think it's arcade [expletive]. So if my response to what I think is a stupid idea is stupid, so be it.

Your response isn't stupid because it's responding to another stupid thing. Your response is stupid because having pitchers practicing hitting a little bit more would not do anything and is an intrinsically stupid idea.

Thanks for explaining it to me Dad, I had no idea. Also, I don't know what sarcasm is and that was an earnest and very real effort.

I'm still laughing at "progress", as if this is the [expletive] Industrial Revolution and not a game.
