[expletive] christ this awful defensive outfield has been making outrageous catches all series
Posted

If you're going to argue that those 3 guys should be available, you're just making a fool of yourself.

We can do this without the snippy personal shots. Or we can do them with, I guess. Either way.

Pedro Strop can't ever, ever go a third day in a row after throwing 16 pitches on back to back days?

I don't think it's crazybuckets to ask our 9th-best reliever who is only here because of multiple injuries not be used in high-leverage situations.

Rondon, Strop, and Rosscup are not options today, so you're got Schlitter, Coke, Germen, Motte, and Jaxon to get you through the game. None of those are terrific options, and considering the circumstances you'd want to maximize your chance at a double play, which is Schlitter all the way.

nope don't argue with the logic fingers guy

Likely wouldn't be in this situation if Maddon had left Hendricks in for more than 80 pitches yesterday. Hell, they might have won in 9 and used a whole lot fewer relievers in the process. That was a head scratcher for me yesterday.

Kemp totally Edmonds'ed that ball. No need to dive if he ran through it, but played it in such a way that he'd have to make the "spectacular" catch.

If strop is available, he's the closer today given that Rondon will definitely NOT be available.

Even with a day off today, both Strop and Rondon are both on pace for over 100 appearances. This is the same argument as Friday, you can't simply go by 'not exhausted? Better throw him out there' or you'll burn out your best pen guys. They've needed a reprieve from either/both of the offense or the starting pitching and neither has cooperated, so the downside is middle relievers have to pitch in more important situations. Losing both Grimm and Ramirez at once means those middle relievers are going to be less reliable. This is a temporal thing, as we'll get some better/deeper starts, the offense will blow people out on occasion, and Grimm is on the mend.

I find the "on pace" argument to be meaningless. The Cubs have played a series of games that were close in the late innings. That won't always be the case. There will be stretches later in the season where the opposite happens and you can rest them then. Win the game in front of you.

I give maddon much more credit than that.

Rivero getting on track would be a nice bonus, too.

It's crazy that, barring a comeback, we're 6-2 in games not started by Jon Lester and 0-3 in games that are.

no

you are awfully bad at remembering stuff for a guy who talks so much about stuff

I'm gonna go crazy outside-the-box and say I wouldn't mind seeing Edwards get a shot. He's not going to be a starter and the learning curve for pitchers isn't that steep. Let's start raking in the value before his arm gives up.

I was thinking about that, too. You can always send him back down and stretch him out after Grimm/Ramirez get back.

what a ridiculous argument. burning them out now damages them in the near term, long before the convenient-to-your-argument stretch of low-leverage games
