It was sarcasm, but ok.

I agree that it is not what I would do. But I'll wait to see things as patterns instead of one time events before I get too excited.

I don't like it but Opening Day can be weird and he could be trying to get Lester settled in with a familiar face so I'll hold off on judging.

The starting pitchers will maybe last 6 innings, so you're probably talking about 2 at bats before Ross hits the pines.

Nah, Lester is going PG in 87 pitches.

Olt is the best 3B on the roster right now. Ross is basically Lester's personal catcher.

It's not rocket science.

If Ross is that, he becomes much less of a decent piece and thus far they haven't said he will be that so I will remain hotel.

Arismendy is a better option vs waino than olt.

the real question is to what extent is mendy a supersub if he doesn't get starts like this one?

and ross as lester's personal catcher sucks even if it is unsurprising.

Well, we were all hoping to see them platoon the two primary catchers since Montero is bad vs lefties and Ross is awful vs righties. We're getting a lot less from that position than we could if we implement Ross as a personal catcher, instead.

As for Olt, I'd hope to see him in against all lefties and right handers who are less tough on the contact-challenged. Healthy Wainwright seems to be a bad matchup for him.

I don't think it's a huge deal to start Ross considering we're carrying 3 catchers and can pinch hit for him, plus he's had a good spring with the bat.

Perhaps Maddon is valuing Olt's contributions with his glove more than his bat for this game. Also, Olt did kind of earn the starting 3B job out of ST. Mostly by default because of Bryant's situation, but he had a really good spring and showed improved plate patience and discipline in the process. Not starting Olt after sending Bryant down after all the "It will be exciting to see what Olt can do during his time with the role" type stuff might also look sketchy, not that the FO really cares about that, but honestly I think Maddon just liked Olt at 3B more, and we can expect to see him start there most games, regardless of pitcher, while Bryant is down in Iowa. They need Olt to perform well so they can move him if they need to, so they should probably squeeze the most out of him that they can while he's got the job.

Also I don't think Alcantara would do THAT much better against Wainwright than Olt that it's a travesty they're starting Olt.

It's not a travesty by any means. But the splits for the three players involved suggest that Alcantara would have a better shot against Wainwright than Olt.

Meh. It's opening night. It's all just semantics today. Things will flesh out more appropriately after.

Does this game not count in the standings or something? I thought we were done with those.

I'm fine deferring on their judgment for how to balance olt, TLS, and alcantara until Bryant is up.

Ross as Lester caddy I do not like, but as an opening day thing and/or they let Castillo face LHP until he's gone, that's probably fine too.

I pretty much assumed that Ross was going to catch every single one of Lester's starts this year.

Lester and maybe Wood. His framing is especially strong with left handed pitchers who need to cut low and in to righties.

Goodness. If Ross gets 60+ starts this year, I'm going to start fires.
