I'd say Motte or Jaxon but since those are taken I'm gonna go with....

wow. this is harder than I thought. it used to be easy to pick a mather, lillibridge, lahair, or even schierholtz.

the only other players i'd pick would make no sense to release. if i can just say i wish we didn't have this guy i guess i'll go with lastella. he'll play too much and hit an empty like .250 (though he'll get on base at like a .325 clip).

doubront

you knew!

Cubs released LHP Felix Doubront.

The veteran southpaw was knocked around in his seven spring innings, allowing nine runs on 17 hits. He will receive 45 days of termination pay from the Cubs, roughly equaling $473,000. He'll look to latch on elsewhere.

My dark horse: Coghlan. So terrible in LF and the bat has popped up for a year before only to be terrible for the next four.,

honestly think his bat is gonna be fine but he's going to be terrible in the OF.

Releasing him seems a bit harsh when he has three options remaining.

Ross, with the assumption that Montero went down and forced him to full time duty.

Dark horse is Fowler, with the assumption that Alcantara hits.

Hey, if he's allowed to post silly things, then I should be, too. It's fine to think he will bust, but to think there isn't one smarter option out there than a 22 year old power-hitting, middle-infielding, multiple-option-possessing 2014 top 5 prospect -- just one... then maybe this thread isn't for you.

The odds of Baez flipping out after he accepts that he's a compete failure at hitting the baseball and ultimately going on a Last Boyscout-type rampage that decimates the Cubs and therefore makes us look back and wish he had been unusually cut in March of 2015 is much, much, MUCH higher with him than with Soler.

Maybe I'm reading this statement wrong, but I'm reading it as regret, and I honestly can't think of an answer as a flat out "cut". There's a clear-cut reason to keep Bryant in the minors, so someone has to hold the fort in the interim. He's going to be up soon, and if for some reason, we're 1 or 2 games out of the playoffs, there's going to be other reasons that we can probably point to other than just Bryant not being there at the start. I really can't see Chris Coghlan, if he's playing poorly, pile up AB's when we have enough other options to rotate in there. Lake/Sweeney/Szczur/Denorfia? Sure, I can imagine us wanting to cut them, but not enough to feel that at the end of the season I might have regret.

The easy answer is Jackson or Wood, but if they aren't depending on him ... and they don't seem to be ... dunno.

Actually, if I'm irked about anything, it's having Olt/Villanueva on the 40 right now, but I imagine someone is going to get shifted when Bryant is ready.

Dunno ... I could see regretting Fowler potentially, if say Alcantara takes off.

All in all, it's a testament to a solid roster that it's hard to identify potential regrets right now.

I'll say Castillo, but even then that's a stretch. I actually sort of like Wellington still, but I guess I can envision that third catcher being a limitation as we try to find time for him. He'll take a space from a bench player or a pen arm early, and maybe we'll regret that if it costs us and we end up not getting much for Castillo anyways, which is the way it's looking (I mean ... what's best case now ... some random Low A/XST lottery pick gamble, right?). Dunno.
