Plus DC is a weird area; it's a hugely transient population with people from all over the country, so looking at that as being the Orioles' fanbase as opposed to Baltimore itself and Maryland just doesn't work to begin with.

Balmer is very provincial and has a terrible inferiority complex. If Chicago is the 2nd city, Balmer suffers in the region because it's not DC and not Philly. One person describes it as "it's where you dump your McDonald's trash coming back from a Redskins game'. They hate out of towners, especially Chicagoans, because Bob Irsay was from Chicago and it it tore the heart out of the city when he moved the Colts.

They're still mad that 'The Sun' took 'Baltimore' off the masthead because research indicated Balmer was regarded as a small city. And O's fans wanted 'Baltimore' on the road jerseys, not just the 'Orioles'. The team refused.

They hate Chicago because Robert Irsay was born there? That's a commitment to hate that I can appreciate.

I wanna know who the one person is with the McDonald's trash description.

One of the local newspapers always had a Sunday sports cartoon of Bob Irsay flying into town with liquor bottles hanging out of his pockets. When Irsay moved the team and the memorabilia to Indy, a group of Balmer business people wanted the team's treasures returned. They also wanted the Colts name back. Irsay said he'd sell it back for $10M. The deal died. The Colts had a bad stadium deal because Memorial Stadium was in a neighborhood with a number of churches nearby. A city ordinance prohibited Colts home games at noon, but rather 1PM. There goes the revenue for early national tv games, etc...

The pronunciation of Baltimore by Baltimoreans? Baltimoreites?

That whole mid-atlantic philly to Baltimore area has a terrible accent that is underplayed in American media.

I lived outside of DC for a long-ass time and spent tons of time in Baltimore; never encountered the whole "they hate people from Chicago" thing.

yeah, and is any hatred for the colts for moving even all that relevant anymore (weird wording but I think you get what I mean)? the ravens (lol irony) have a pretty rabid following and the move happened in 1983...most of the people that care about that are like in their 50's and 60's. and that's just the ones who still care.

They're also called 'Baltimorons' by many people in Annapolis.

You led a sheltered life. Try Fell's Point, Little Italy, Towson, Hunt Valley, Arbutus for starters.

I lived there for a couple of years. "Balmer" brings back memories.

Everyone who goes to Baltimore goes to Fell's Point; the waterfront area is by far the city's biggest draw. The last three are unincorporated suburbs; that's like telling someone they need to go to Glen Ellyn to REALLY "get" Chicago.

And your point is...what? Try the Candler Building or Lexington Market. Did you ever go to Haussner's? Talk to 'Homer' Bagli or Laura Charles? My point still stands.

Just that I've been to Baltimore a lot (including the 2003 homestand against the Cubs, where you're not shy about where you're from), have a bunch of friends from or still living in Baltimore (most of whom are big sports fans and would have glommed on to something like that), and never encountered or heard anything about people from Chicago being hated there because of Irsay (or anything else). Sounds like maybe it was a generational thing. Edited by Sammy Sofa

it's not really the type of show that's capable of being ruined by spoilers. i probably don't even remember how most of the storylines ended
