What's amazing is that these lurkers all coming out lurk so hard that so many saw this conversation despite it being within a random minor league day game thread.

Well, I'd guess the minor league game day threads are slightly more popular these days...

Long time lurker on this board, use to post a ton on Cubs.com with Tim, and followed him over when he started this. Just don't have a much time as I use to when Cubs.com board was around. But like someone mentioned earlier, you learn something new everyday and the minor league info on here is second to none!!

Good job guys, excellent really...

I knew they'd show themselves fairly quickly here, it's like chumming the water for the sharks. Back to lurking quick!

I see Kyle being sarcastic and goony suggesting that someone with thin skin will have a hard time pretty much anywhere on the internet (but being a bit more blunt and condescending about it).

I hope you can take a step back and see that while that certainly isn't ideal behavior, bluntly calling people out for being rude is very similar behavior to the original rudeness. It is just a different trigger for acting in a similar way.

As you rightly suggest, there are more subtle and preferable ways to offer alternatives.

A lot of posters here routinely get away with treating other people like total crap and when someone calls them out for it everyone else piles on,it's exactly the reason you have so few posters here. Just my opinion. I'll go back to just reading again and quit trying to swim up river. Enjoy the grand jackassery as it's always been.

Why are you so sensitive about snark on a message board? That's what I'm not understanding. It's part of what makes this place as entertaining as it is. There's no reason to take it so personally.

And when you do things like complain that Addison Russel might not be that good because he starts off 1 for 15 or whatever, you absolutely deserve snark.

Well, it was hard to convince many people Rizzo would become a .400 wOBA at the time.

Plus, we did not yet have Rizzo.

Still, it wasn't like it was some thread clearly labeled to be about lurkers or anything. If this random conversation generated this much of a response, who knows how many there really are in total.

Which made convincing people that much more difficult...duhhhhh.

I do think baseball discussions could be kept more baseball-y and less pile-on-y.

But I'm just saying "having so few posters" isn't necessarily a bad thing. The world doesn't need another CubsDen or BCB or BleacherNation comments section with a thousand points of dim light each contributing their bad opinions.

Definitely not, but there are a lot more smarter baseball fans out there on the internet these days and we could use more of those. *Most* of the regulars here have been here for a really really long time...back when looking at OBP was considered newfangled.

That's what I was saying yesterday. It's the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday during a poor Cubs season and there are 25 - 30 guests browsing the forums right now, and another 20 - 25 registered users who rarely or never post also browsing. That's some solid lurkage right there.

davearm said things like aramis ramirez should spend more time practicing bunting, and defended putting aaron harang into a game to throw 50+ pitches on like 2 days rest because there was "no other alternative" (when the cubs just demonstrated last night one of the alternatives - putting a backup catcher in to pitch). davearm was wrong about nearly everything. he is not missed.

I don't disagree, but I think the higher level of discussion itself is going to discourage your average passing fan from being as active here as they would at say a BleacherNation message board or somewhere else. Conversely, I think smarter fans looking for better conversation are going to be drawn to a board like this and away from some of those other places.

Three years later, davearm was right about everything.

I made like three posts in one year and davearm agreed strongly with all of them. I gave up on posting for a while after that.

Yeah, but there were a few months in 2011 where almost every argument was him saying the Cubs would/should rebuild and being blasted from all sides. It's funny to look back now.

We were all still buying into the "dual fronts" and "all revenues will be spent on the club" lines. If the team had a $150M payroll this whole time, I believe things would have been done much differently.

I would LOVE for someone to tell me how to stop audio ads from google adsense.

LOVE it.
